Watched a classic. Pardes. Suddenly realized it had been ages since I'd seen a young SRK movie for the first time. I've gotten into a habit of just re-watching what I know. Very much enjoyed it. Probably wouldn't have if I was just starting off as a BW fan, but now I'm used to some of the tropes and 'traditions' in certain romances. This was actually one of his most charming roles, I think. But he's always charming Agreed! I love young shahrukh films, it was back when he did more content driven stuff, and less whatever tickles his fancy. That being said, I can't wait for Dilwale. Just take a look at his variety of roles in the 90's: Deranged, obsessive psychopath: Baazigar (obsessive for revenge), Darr (obsessive for love), Anjaam (obsessive about satisfying his own ego) - note the subtleties that he brings to each character based upon their motives. In Baazigar, he portrays a cold-blooded killer who is tragically unable to understand that in the process of avenging his own scarred life, he is scarring the lives of so many other innocents. In Darr, we are meant to feel a very tiny ounce of sympathy for Rahul simply because whatever he is doing, he is doing for love. Anjaam is the one villain role in which no sympathy is served - SRK plays an inherently dark soul who has no motive for being evil and simply does so out of a sadistic desire to make others suffer at his enjoyment. Obsessive but harmless lover: Deewana, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa - these films had him playing a more positive connotation of the obsessive lover, in that his obsession drives him to make noble sacrifices and do whatever he can to make the girl he loves happy. The helpless underdog: Pardes, Yes Boss, DDLJ: By far his most memorable set of roles. Pardes has him playing the poor foster child yearning for the love of family, the result of which forces him to lie through his teeth through the girl he loves in an attempt to earn the respect of his foster father and foster brother. Yes Boss has him playing the frustrated twenty-something yuppie striving to earn success for the sake of his beloved yet having to sacrifice his love to reach his goal. DDLJ sees him as an underdog in the sense that he doesn't fit in the mold of the Indian alpha male and must prove himself with his character to be worthy of marriage. The bumbling idiot: Zamaana Deewana, Duplicate, Baadshah The arrogant alpha male: Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Josh The father/uncle figure: King Uncle, English Babu Desi Mem, Pardes (1st half), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Action hero: Karan Arjun, Koyla, Duplicate Offbeat cinema: Oh Darling Yeh Hai India, Dil Se, Hey Ram

A case of "Dancuss Interuptus." Quite a scene! SRK's beautiful dance partner is Raveena Tandon. She looked *so* much like Kajol in this! What happened? Dancelover [snip - d] Last night I saw Zamaana Deewana, a SRK film from 1995 directed by Ramesh Sippy. What a truly crazy movie. It has the elements of a good movie in there....somewhere, but wow is it crazy. [snip - d] There are some individual moments, though, especially some of the songs in this movie that stand out, and I'll be buying the DVD. THIS is one. If you've never seen it, this is one of THE hottest Shahrukh song sequences ever and has to be added to my Hindi rain song favorites: Zamaana Deewana was a good film whose main problem was that it couldn't decide what it wanted to be - a laugh-out-loud comedy, a passionate love story, or a feud drama. It ended up just being a grand mess. The individual scenes that portrayed these genres were excellent, but simply didn't work in terms of a cohesive screenplay. However, there were some great musical numbers, including the one you posted above, "Neend Kise Chain Kahan". My personal favorite is "Zamaana Deewana Ho Gaya" for its peppy rhythm and Vinod Rathod's infectious energy.

Of course, several changes would have to be made to adapt to the modern-day scenario; perhaps having Rajiv's character as less of an outright villain and more of a inherently decent human being who is simply ignorant of the expectations of Indian culture?

I watched Lamhe last night and Sridevi is a goddess! She showed such range playing the two roles of mother and daughter! It was very fun seeing Anil Kapoor in his prime (after Dil Dhadakne Do this summer). This morning I saw Katti Batti at the first matinee. It isn't great, but it's not as terrible as some say. Fuller thoughts here on its own thread.

I rewatched 3 Idiots this past weekend and it is just so well put together. Such a classic. I appreciate it so much more now, after 150+ Indian films. I saw it early in my obsession last year, and at the time did not realize how special a film it is. Last night I saw the Mani Ratman Tamil romance O Kadhnal Kanmani which I adored!! It's available for rental on Google play, but I'm really glad I paid a little extra to just buy it, because I will be watching it again! Full thoughts here. I saw A R Rahman in concert and first heard the song Mental Manadhil there, and had to see the movie. It did not disappoint, and A R Rahman even has a cameo at the end.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan was very predictable but still entertaining! The over-emotional slow motion at the end was so long that it was almost ridiculous. The chicken song was funny! This was probably the best Salman film that I've seen so far. (But I've not seen many.)

This weekend was super busy with various things, but I managed to watch ONE Indian movie, with much difficulty. I was captivated by Dulquer Salmaan from O Kadhal Kanmani, and on Tumblr had seen lots of GIFs and recommendations for the Malayali movie Bangalore Days. Turns out Dulquer is one of the three leads of the film. I gather this was a blockbuster for Malayalam films in 2014, and I would highly recommend it. It's only on einthusan.com which was the problem. I will try never to watch a relatively popular movie on that service again on a Friday or Saturday night. UGH! It kept crashing repeatedly, or showing the film in fits and starts. It was super super frustrating. I finally got it to work on my iPad and finished watching the movie there. The movie is a coming of age film romantic comedy about three cousins who are as close as the three musketeers. Their dream is to go from their little village to the big city of Bangalore. There is naive Kuttan, who is moving to Bangalore to be a software engineer, but who is nostalgic for the simple farming life of the village. Divya, who dreams of getting an MBA, but whose parents arrange a marriage for her. And finally Arjun (Aju) played by Dulquer. He's the rebel, school dropout who wants to be a motorcross bike racing star. Yes, really Motor cross in an Indian film! Sort of like Dil Chahta Hai each of the three has their own romantic story, but thankfully there is a girl in the mix this time. Her arranged marriage is in trouble from the start -- on her wedding night that isn't the hubby takes a work video conference call. She learns her husband had a past serious relationship that he is not over, and her young cousins are her support and solace. While her husband flies away on business trip after business trip, she goes out and has fun with her wild cousins. Each story is so adorable, and the three of the cousins together all grow up and change over the course of the film. Aju (Dulquer) has an amazing storyline. He falls in love with the voice of a radio DJ, who he calls in to flirt with. When he decides to surprise her in the radio station, he discovers {Click to view if you don't mind spoilers, but don't if you want a sweet surprise} She's in a motorized wheelchair! After the initial shock, he pursues her, and betters himself to be worthy of her. I just about swooned away. Not something you see every day in an Indian film.
It's just a really, really good feel warm and fuzzy by the end film. The marriage with Divya when you find out why the husband has acted the way he has.....I cried. The movie player was crashing and I was crying even watching it in fits and starts. The way Divya gets resolution and healing for him.... fantastic. Each person is a whole fully fleshed out character. Even the husband who you think is unfeeling and cold, ends up having incredible hidden depths to his past. Here's the trailer. It's not chock full of songs, but this wedding one was my favorite. showing the crazy friendship of the cousins as Aju shows up to the wedding party. They're singing about the bride being a caged green bird, with a cage made of vegetables?? Something is lost in the subtitles on that one: AND, in looking up what Dulquer Salaam films are coming soon, I discovered that he has a degree in business administration from PURDUE, where my son is currently a freshman.

Tonight I watched the first half of Anari , a film I've been wanting to see for a while and just now getting to it. (It was the song "Kisi ki muskarahaton" that made me fall in love with RK in the first place...first video that came up on YouTube when I searched his name out of curiosity.) Wonderful little '50s rom-com so far. Raj plays an adorably clueless man reminiscent of his country tramp persona from Shree 420. Lalita Pawar is awesome as usual. Nutan (my first film starring her!!) is spunky, expressive and just a plain joy to see on scream. Even Motilal--a favorite of mine--is in the mix. I left off on a strange yet catchy song ode to 1959 featuring the dancing talents of a 21-year old Helen!
Nice to sit down and watch at least part of a Bolly film. I've been so busy as of late...needed my RK fix!

Finally got to see Bajrangi Bhaijaan. It was just as tear-jerking and precious as I thought it would be. I'll agree with a previous poster the end scene was way too drawn out! I'm still not a big Salman Khan fan but I think Kabir Khan really gets him. Ek Tha Tiger was also right in his wheelhouse. The child actress was amazing and Kareena just brought a whole other level of charm and glamour to the proceedings. I'm truly in love with Nawazuddin Siddiqui and he can do no wrong. And what a charming cameo by Om Puri. Great message film!

I finally saw Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. I'm a little surprised at how I didn't really like it. There were sections that I liked, there were some interesting mirrors held up to reflect gender politics and cycles of self-perpetuating violence, and there were some beautiful images. I liked most of the music. I hate-hate-hated how they styled Ranveer's character. He looked like an Indian version of Fabio ripped right off some cheezy bodice-ripper romance novels. Blech. Deepika, on the other hand, I think has never looked more beautiful. But I never really believed their love story, which for me, was the fatal flaw. My theory is that SLB drew it out too long. In the source material, the entire intense drama from lust-at-first-sight to both young lovers dead happens in less than a week. In this movie, way too much time passes for me to believe they haven't gained some perspective or made a workable plan or given it up and decided to hate each other like everyone else in their families or something.

I haven't watched much Bolly over the last few weeks - have just been too exhausted from moving house. I think in my last post I said I had watched Charulata. I have seen Mr India since then but don't remember how it ends (perhaps I didn't see it all the way through - my brain has gone to mush, I don't remember, waahh!). Finally have all the A/V set up and our internet connected once again. I watched Bombay Velvet earlier in the week and I didn't love it. It was good but I didn't find Johnny Balraj a likeable character even though he was heroic towards Rosie at the end. Although it was set in the 60s, to me the film noir and gangster styling made it feel as if it were set in an earlier decade. I probably wouldn't watch it again (or not for some time at least). The technician who came to sort out our internet connection was from Gujurat and, of course, we got on to the subject of Bolly movies . He felt the same about BV. He recommended I see the 1978 Don . I have a stack of black & white DVDs to start watching - so much to watch...

Just back from Singh is Bling. The long version of my review is in the new thread I just started; the short version is: "I was pleasantly surprised to get a movie that was consistently cute, likable, funny, cool to look at, and where the supporting cast actually held up their end well. The humor is silly and comes with its share of wacky sound effects but feels much more mellow and comfortable than the standard Stupid Shouty Bollywood Comedy."

Thanks to EROSNOW, I am now taking the time to watch classic Bollywood films, since most of my viewing has been 1995 forward, with the exceptions of Sholay, Mother India, and Mugal-E-Azam, to date. I just watched An Evening in Paris and Aradhana, both with Sharmila Tagore and I look forward to watching all of her films now. I've always been a Saif Ali Khan fan and, wow, they look exactly alike. So far not too impressed with either Shammi Kapoor or Rajesh Khanna (though at least Rajesh Khanna has some sex appeal...that scene in Aradhana is hot).
