I just watched An Evening in Paris and Aradhana, both with Sharmila Tagore and I look forward to watching all of her films now. I've always been a Saif Ali Khan fan and, wow, they look exactly alike. In Kashmir ki Kali the resemblance was so strong that in some scenes I felt like I was watching a young Saif in drag - it was quite disconcerting. Don't let that put you off - I really enjoyed the film.

Just finished Ram Leela. Well-made, but in spite of good performances from Ranveer and Deepika, I found myself more interested in the whole broader politics of the feud and the people it affects, especially Ram's and Leela's sisters-in-law, in the lovers. I will go write more in the thread.

All is Well - it didn't get good reviews but I didn't mind it as a one-off watch. It wasn't as dire as I was expecting.

I went to see DDLJ at the Chicago South Asian Film festival on Saturday. My first time seeing it on a the big screen!! Not a huge theater, and frankly I was hoping for more hoots and hollers. SRK did get a big cheer at his first appearance! I think the most amusing was how people would laugh in anticipation of laughing -- they'd laugh at the very beginning of a funny scene because they knew what was coming, like Raj's father with Simran's aunt colliding with all the roses falling.
I was the probably the only non-Desi in the room, but the guy next to me came in late, and it was pretty obviously his first time seeing it. It was amusing hearing him whisper, "Oh, no!" at times like when Simran's father finds the photo.
The movie was over at 9, and I made the spur of the moment decision to stay and see Dum Laga Ke Haisha on the big screen.
While I was waiting at the festival table for them to send me my ticket email, a Desi festival official overheard me ask for Dum Laga, and said, "I've heard it's supposed to be pretty funny."
I said, "It is! I actually own it on DVD, but I've never seen it on the big screen." She had no idea it was already out on DVD, and I then had to explain to her Induna.com and spell out the name because she had never heard of it. I just found it very amusing.
During the movie, some of the biggest laughs came during the scene where Sandhya and Prem are fighting by playing different music tapes, and he keeps coming out of the bath to change it. There was no translation of the songs, but they got big laughs. I may need to play that scene for my neighbors to get the translation now.

Watched Nayakan = Nayakudu = Nayagal ((1987): it seems that Kamal Hassan imitates Marlon Brando in the Godfather! I don't ubnderstand this kind of movie. 5/10 Neal 'N' Nikki (2005) : another flaw. 3/10 Oh Darling Yeh Hai India (1995) : and another bad movie. 4/10 I can't find new great films. Maybe I have seen too much Bollys (nearly 600), and I begin to be saturated. Luckily, I rewatched Dil Bole Hadippa! (2009) : action, love, humour, songs, choreographies, messages there is everything I needed! 8/10

Bombay Velvet *ing Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma & Karan Johar
The film wasn't horrible to watch but it was obvious that Anurag Kashyap had to compromise.
It's really a pity because it would have been more interesting if the movie had been made in 2 or 3 part à la Gang of Wayssepur or Red Riding this way we could have followed various characters who were involved in thé construction of Mumbay. Instead, we are served with a non-epic and previsible love story.
Anurag may have wanted to show that his characters were grey but it hardly showed.
The editing was bad and it seems that Rosie only appeared for the songs.

I think Amar Prem might be my favorite among Hindi films, but her Bengali films are better. Nayak (by Satyajit Ray) and Barnali are two of my all-time favorites. (Both on youtube if you want to check her out). Never thought of her as a young Saif in drag! In Khoya Khoya Chand Soha plays a actress of the 60s and looks exactly like her I think.

So far not too impressed with either Shammi Kapoor or Rajesh Khanna (though at least Rajesh Khanna has some sex appeal...that scene in Aradhana is hot). Give Junglee a try. Shammi remained charming throughout his career but got pretty tubby in the late '60s, losing a lot of his looks (as all the Kapoor bros eventually did). But in Junglee (1961) he's still relatively young-looking and adorable; it's my favorite of his films.

Just watched Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! and now understand a little more why Sushant Singh Rajput is so well-liked as a newcomer. I did see Kai Po Che and thought all of the leads were strong, even if the script failed them at the end. Also enjoyed Shuddhi Desi Romance, but thought Shushant's character was a retread of Ranveer's character in Band Baaja Baarat. And still wasn't sure I found Sushant attractive or not (I know I'm shallow). Still avoiding PK (Aamir Khan is sooooo overrated, IMHO), but now may watch it because Sushant is in it.
Back to Byomkesh Bakshy!...my biggest complaint was the modern music. I appreciate what the director was trying to do but the music coupled with the random weird camera work was not successful. I was watching on my computer and at one point with the weird music I thought a web browser had opened up and was playing a video or something. The climax was a little hammy and sequel bait, but there were certainly lovely, thrilling, and interesting moments along the way.

When I first started An Evening in Paris, I was hoping for an Indian version of Rock Hudson crossed with Fred Astaire and what I got was the Indian version of Jack Black:) I think it will be easy for me to find heroines/actresses I like in the classics (Sharmila was an immediate favorite), but I haven't found my Cary Grant/Rock Hudson/Paul Newman yet:)

Shashi Kapoor and Sanjeev Kumar* are two actors that fit more of the suave mold, and two actors I also highly recommend. *Edited...Sanjeev KUMAR, not Kapoor. As always, I have Kapoors on the brain...

I started to watch Housefull - got to the bit early on when they are jiggling about after getting an electric shock from the vacuum cleaner and then thought 'this is a bit crap' - does it improve?
So then watched Baahubali (dubbed Hindi). Enjoyed that, it is a spectacle and the flashback battle reminded me of Lord of the Rings (Return of the King) - there was something orc-ish about the 100,000 strong enemy and something wood-elvish about the way the shields were linked together. Looking forward to the continuation of the story next year.

Finally watched PK-though I always like Anushka Sharma and the Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjay Dutt cameos were well done, this message movie was very heavy handed and Aamir Khan's way over the top acting did not help. It's not that I don't appreciate his dedication and his choice of thought-provoking films, he's just hard to watch in this wide-eyed, innocent avatar (it's why I couldn't stand Dhoom 3 either).
Also continued my dabbling in the classics and watched Ek Shriman Ek Shrimati and really enjoyed Shashi Kapoor and Babita (both of whom I was seeing for the first time). The plot was absolutely bonkers but in a strangely endearing way. And Shashi Kapoor's dancing in the engagement scene reminded me of Elaine's dancing in Seinfeld.
Rewatched Aaaja Nachle with a friend who I'm trying to "convert" and it went well! Also rewatched Chori Chori (2003), one of my favorite romances...Ajay and Rani together are so good, and Khoobsurat (pretty fluff). It's been a busy weekend.

I like Chori Chori too. Need to track down a copy. Tried watching Revolver Rani, and even with copious fastforwarding of the scenes with the bad guys stalled out around the part where the heroine takes Vir Das back after beating him up for cheating on her. The film's well made in some ways: nice cinematography, cool locations, pretty good acting, and except for the Madonna/Lady Gaga undergarments, I kind of like the heroine's fashion sense. I've seen comments to the effect that the filmmakers seemed to be mocking either Kangna or her character; admittedly I am not as attuned to the finer points of Kangna's screen persona as some, but to me she seemed to be in on the joke and her character although cartoonish at times was more sympathetically portrayed than anyone else's. But man oh man, the script and the editing are just so dull and unfocused. Active stupidity in those departments I can handle, if I like the actors or the characters enough and there's enough wackiness going on to compensate. I'm not going to ask if it gets better, but does it at least get weirder or more interesting?
