We have reviews of KK in our thread bollywhat.boards.net/thread/172 Dancelover [snip] I watched the Tamil film Kandukondain Kandukondain (I Have Found It) - with Tabu and Aish in a retelling of Sense and Sensibility. Their voices were both dubbed by Tamil actresses, and Aish's was so high-pitched it almost sounded like baby talk. Her dancing was wonderful, though, and I enjoyed both her and Tabu in this. The Indian setting really worked for the story, but the final conflict keeping Tabu and her suitor apart was pretty lame. The standout for me was Mammootty who played the Major (Alan' Rickman's Colonel in the 1995 English version). The Major in this film is not only older but has lost part of his leg in a war. Everyone knows the story right? Don't watch if it would be a spoiler for you, but this ending scene with him and Aish -- I just loved him in this: And can I just say, I love the music of the sound of both the Tamil and Telugu languages.

I watched Chupke Chupke this week. This is a very enjoyable farce where Dharmendra first impersonates a lowly caretaker, and then plays an elaborate prank on his new brother-in-law by becoming his driver. Amitabh plays his best friend. It was fun to watch Amitabh play a nerdy character. He really reminded me of Abhi's comedy in this. So different than most of what I have seen Amitabh do. This is my first time seeing Jaya so young, and she was absolutely adorable. But on to the main pair of the movie. Dharmendra was amazing! Yes, I have seen Sholay (in less than ideal circumstances with my BIL laughing throughout.) But Dharmendra! He is SUCH a hottie in this, and so funny! The subtitles I had were actually very good, because they explained some of the word play -- at one point noting (Goo in Hindi means Sh*t)!! And I looked up Sharmila because her smile was so familiar and went AHA! -- she's Saif's mother and he looks SO much like her, especially his smile. I was disappointed that we sort of leapt straight from the caretaker schtick to their wedding, because Sharmila and Dharmendra were sizzling together. Certain parts of this movie moved very, very fast in plot, and other parts just kind of stayed in place to milk every possible moment of farce. I enjoy a good farce, but farces need to be fast paced, and this movie sometimes was languid. I also sort of didn't get the POINT of creating such an elaborate multi-day prank on a brother-in-law?? Frequently farces are lies to hide something -- like the fact that a leopard is on the loose like in Bringing Up Baby. Or like in Housefull putting on a good show for in-laws. This was just a prank for prank's sake. But back to Dharmendra. WOW. He was fantastic in this. So funny, so cute, so sexy, so everything. And he is 1000 times more good looking than his sons who must take after their poor mother.

moviemavengal, I'm so glad you liked Chupke Chupke! It's such a delightful little film. And I looked up Sharmila because her smile was so familiar and went AHA! -- she's Saif's mother and he looks SO much like her, especially his smile. Isn't it striking?! Once you know it, you can't unsee it. But back to Dharmendra. WOW. He was fantastic in this. So funny, so cute, so sexy, so everything. And he is 1000 times more good looking than his sons who must take after their poor mother. Dharmendra is a Grade A hottie, for sure. And I find Sunny pretty attractive, especially in his younger years, but to each their own.

Seems India at that time agreed with us that he's a hottie! And he named his new restaurant after that!!

Moviemavengal: glad you liked Kandukondain-that scene in particular is one of my favorites. watched Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, fastforwarding some of the more Salman-centric parts. It strikes a fairly good balance in tone, just silly enough to keep me from being appalled at what the characters are doing (Chupke Chupke felt too realistic for me to be comfortable with some of the stuff Dharam gets up to) but not silly enough to keep me from caring about the characters. The film feels more carefully made than a lot of these silly comedies, with good production values and a good director of photography. And also a tall glamorous heroine and a tall glamorous antagonist/co-hero apparently chosen to emphasis the feelings of insecurity Salman's character Sameer suffers from: nearly every scene with Priyanka is set up to emphasize that he sees her character as a woman on a pedestal, nearly every scene with Akshay is set up to emphasize how overpowering Sameer finds Sunny. And Akshay's performance contains plenty of subtle hints that Sunny sees Sameer as a friend, not a rival. People always compare this to As Good as It Gets and Anger Management, for obvious reasons, but to me there's a bit of The Bishop's Wife/The Preacher's Wife, in that you have the designated hero and the woman he's supposed to be with, and this friendly meddler who swoops in to flirt with the woman and straighten the man out, and in the process just completely steals the movie. "Wicked Sunny" would perhaps be hard to take if I were more of a Salman fan or if I didn't know that Sunny was trying to help, but as it is I thought he was pretty darned dashing and funny-I particularly like the way he just kind of spontaneously breaks out into dance (without a song picturization) when things are going his way. And yet...somehow I like post-2010 Akki better than 00s Akki. Weird. Salman is also funny-the comic slow-burn anger scenes are a hoot-but seems disinterested and unconvincing in the more serious moments. Priyanka is stunningly gorgeous, has a couple of good dance scenes, and a few minutes of being convincingly passionate about her character's career in fashion design that feels like a preview of her real-life passion for her own career. Other than that, she's terrible, flashing her phoniest smile at the camera every three minutes and showing zero chemistry with either of the men (and they with her: they have better chemistry with each other, believe it or not). This surprised me, because although Priyanka's not really my thing I've usually found her to be competent or better in the films I've seen her in, and she and Akshay played off each other pretty well in their other movies. I dunno, it won't walk your dog or cure cancer, but assuming you like at least one of the guys and are willing to tolerate the other one, and aren't put off by the sometimes aggressive fanservice (both male and female) and Amrish Puri's increasingly spectacular injuries, it might be worth a look. It is heavily centered on Salman, so it's a no-go if you can't stand him, and as I've said before I've occasionally had Wicked Sunny pointed out to me as a reason people dislike Akshay (not as frequently as Tees Maar Khan, Kambakkht Ishq, or Chandni Chowk to China though), so keep that in mind.

I've had a horrible day. More horrible than any day I've had recently. Only one thing brought me out of this horribleness. I managed to fix the DVD of AWARA (!!!!!) that crapped out on me months ago and finish the film. This means SO much to me. It instantly made my day 200% better. Great film, but its effect on my psyche was even greater. Only this masterpiece could have brought me out of the doldrums I suffered all day. I'm so happy I finished and will have more thoughts in Film Fair later. !!!!!

Watched about 1/3 of Jab Jab Phool Khile tonight. Watching unsubbed, but that's ok, as I've seen Raja Hindustani which is heavily inspired by this colorful '60s flick. Y'all know that RH is one of my guilty pleasures; well this one is a non-guilty pleasure so far...much less annoying than its '96 counterpart and it has some great music. And Shashi. is. so. stinking. cute. here. Having just seen him as an earnest little kid in Awara, it gives me great pleasure to see him in a role that despite his being older, he's still totes adorbs. Seriously...that face!

I've seen two movies recently that couldn't be more different. This weekend I watched Kiran Rao's Dhobi Ghat, which is such a film festival kind of flick. Knew nothing about it going in other than it had Aamir. It's Kiran Rao's only directorial film and has intersecting stories about various people in Mumbai, including Pratiek as Munna, the dhobi -- he was the annoying younger slacker brother in Jaane Tu...Ya Jaana Na. Prateik was excellent (he doesn't seem to have done much else since.) I thought Kiran using the dhobi as the connection between the characters was very smart -- it shows the "real" Mumbai, and a person like that has entre into the upper strata of life, too. Since I had the DVD I watched all the bonus videos, and the most fascinating was how they were able to film Aamir in this run down neighborhood apartment -- by sneaking him in in the dead of night and he basically didn't leave for three weeks. Then the people in the other apartments caught on, but were bargained to keep quiet if he would visit on the last day, and the end of the bonus film was him eating at kitchen table after little kitchen table home cooked meals and taking endless pictures with families. It was adorable. Also, filming him in a crowded street scene just walking in the crowd -- how they carefully planned with hidden cameras and pulled it off by having him wear a motorcycle helmet as he arrived was very interesting. The film was really interesting, but I thought Aamir and Kiran were rather pretentious in the bonus casting video talking about how they struggled to find the "right" person to play the artist Arun, and that Aamir had to convince her to cast him. Please. Putting his name on this was the sure fire way to get attention for the film. Last night I saw Zamaana Deewana, a SRK film from 1995 directed by Ramesh Sippy. What a truly crazy movie. It has the elements of a good movie in there....somewhere, but wow is it crazy. There are moments that are wonderful.....and then..... You get half an hour into the film, and realize it was all a dream sequence. What?? I mean, this guy directed Sholay? And then 20 years later his directing career screeched to a halt, I'm gathering, because of this movie. It's crazy that this movie came out in 1995 -- the same year as DDLJ. I can see Shahrukh earnestly trying to do the same shtick in many scenes, but he doesn't have the same level of script to work with -- or level of actors to work off. Anupam Kher is crazy in this film -- doing very broad comedy, and at one point does a drag number for basically no reason at all. This masala movie is just insane! I could see if you narrated this movie to someone -- telling them the bones of the Romeo and Juliet type story -- it does make a good yarn. It just doesn't come together the way Sippy presents it to us. There are some individual moments, though, especially some of the songs in this movie that stand out, and I'll be buying the DVD. THIS is one. If you've never seen it, this is one of THE hottest Shahrukh song sequences ever and has to be added to my Hindi rain song favorites:

A case of "Dancuss Interuptus." Quite a scene! SRK's beautiful dance partner is Raveena Tandon. She looked *so* much like Kajol in this! What happened? Watched a classic. Pardes. Suddenly realized it had been ages since I'd seen a young SRK movie for the first time. I've gotten into a habit of just re-watching what I know. Very much enjoyed it. Probably wouldn't have if I was just starting off as a BW fan, but now I'm used to some of the tropes and 'traditions' in certain romances. This was actually one of his most charming roles, I think. But he's always charming

I watched Jootha Hi Sahi with John Abraham playing a nerdy stuttering character. It was very different than most Indian films, as besides one brother/sister living together, there was no extended family at all in the movie. No parents whatsover, just a group of friends living in London, which felt strange. It was cute, and I enjoyed John's sweet Clark Kent persona, but the heroine wasn't the best pairing for him. A non-Desi neighbor had seen Bang Bang at my house, and texted me asking if I had ever heard of her Indian co-worker's favorite movie, Kabhi Kushi Khabie Gham. Heard of it? I OWN it on Blu-ray! So, I had an enjoyable evening showing her the film at my house, and explaining fine points, and who all the players were -- and keeping the box of Kleenex handy for the ending. I watched the Tamil film Kandukondain Kandukondain (I Have Found It) - with Tabu and Aish in a retelling of Sense and Sensibility. Everyone knows the story right? Don't watch if it would be a spoiler for you, but this ending scene with him and Aish -- I just loved him in this: And can I just say, I love the music of the sound of both the Tamil and Telugu languages. And then, finally Lagaan!!!! Those of you who saw my post in recent Desi-related purchase know that I accidentally bought this in PAL, and finally to watch it bought a cheap region-free DVD player. Yes, just to watch Lagaan again, the first Bollywood film I ever saw all those years ago. It was just as wondrous as I remembered. The soundtrack!! But boy, you feel like you've lived through a three day cricket match watching it. I broke it up over two nights. Aamir is just at his peak in this film, both in looks and acting. Kandukondain needs a Hindi remake immediately! Preferrably directed by Rajiv Menon and produced by Phantom (they have that good balance between art and commercial cinema unlike YRF and Dharma) Possible titles: Nadaan (The Innocent One) Manzil (Destination) Cast: SRK in Mammooty's role Deepika in Tabu's role Shraddha Kapoor in Aishwarya Rai's role Ranveer Singh in Ajith Kumar's role Ayushmann Khurana (guest appearance) in Abbas' role Kirron Kher as the mother Raveena Tandon (guest apperance) as the evil aunt Music: A.R Rahman would be great for the hindi version, especially if he updated the songs to match modern-day musical sensibilities. Lyrics: Gulzar

What's the one with SRK and Katrina Kaif and Anoushka Sharma? I saw it on a flight back in February but the flight landed before I could see the very end. Keep meaning to get around to watch that part, but the movie disgusted and disappointed me so much I don't know that I will. >.> Haven't seen anything more recently; right now I'm getting through of a couple of anime series, and it has been a really long time since I watched any anime. ^^; Jab Tak Hai Jaan - quite frankly the worst film of the otherwise legendary Yash Chopra.
