Pyaar ke Side Effects - I really enjoyed this one. You'd think that Mallika Sherawat ad Rahul Bose would't work as a couple but they do.

Oh, my gosh, how I LOVED Dear Zindagi. I think this is a great crossover movie, too. I've already made plans to bring some non-Bollywood friends to see it later this week. Really liked Alia's performance. She has something about her vulnerability on screen that makes me cry when she has those breakdowns, like the end of Highway, Udta Punjab and now Dear Zindagi. Full thoughts here on my blog. It killed me as a super SRK fan to not be able to see this first day, but we were traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday. Finally caught it on Saturday. One of my readers recommended the Telugu Sahasam Swasaga Sagipo (Live Adventurously) with Naga Chaitanya which was in the theater close to me last week. Since I'd enjoyed him in Premam and Manam so much, I ran out to see his latest. It's not quite as good as either other film, but was still enjoyable. Look for it on einthusan or the like when it comes out. It's a romance/thriller based on one scene in The Godfather (the hospital scene.) Full review here. Watched an old Salman Khan and Kajol flick, Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, otherwise known as that film where Salman sings shirtless with a guitar. It was okay, but not the best. The music numbers are terrific, though. Full thoughts here. I watched on Netflix streaming the film A Decent Arrangement and let me steer you away. It's basically one of those NRI comes to India and thinks arranged marriage is crazy, and finds another girl on his own, blah blah blah. Could have been a decent Indie flick, but the acting is REALLY BAD. Stay away.

Pink - Really strong film all around: message, directing, acting, and editing. Definitely deserves all the critical acclaim and easily one of the best movies of the year. After reading this, I decided to give Pink a go. All I can say is that it was excellent! Thank you @filmilibrarian. Glad you liked it, too! It really was a gripping film with a very important message.

I'm glad that this film was made because it is an important message and, as far as I'm concerned, one that can't be said often enough.

Dear Zindagi - saw this on opening day and there were only 8 in the audience but it was a 1pm screening. Loved it. Both SRK and Alia were FAB, as was the entire cast.
M.S. Dhoni: the Untold Story - had me engrossed and I much preferred it to Azhar.

Finally got to see Kapoor and Sons. I realized watching it that this is my first Alia movie, and I'll have to see more of them. She was just great in this--not a dream or a reward or a MPDG, but a real flawed person. I thought even Sid turned in a good performance, and I don't usually find him terribly affecting. The only thing I really didn't like was Rishi's prosthetics, but I recently read an interview where he said he asked to use them because he wanted the old man to be "cute." I have to admit, it did prevent me from thinking "there's Rishi Kapoor" everytime he appeared.
And I'm in the middle of Do Anjaane and won't have time to finish it soon, but it is super fun so far. The opening credits, which scroll over Amitabh Bachchan's bloody face, let you know exactly what kind of movie this will be. Amitabh loses his memory twice successively in the first 20 minutes of the movie. (Or maybe he loses it and then regains it, but loses the part after he lost it the first time). Got Rekha in it also.
Japan's first Bollywood release of 2016 (and last, I would imagine) is going to be PK! Unfortunately showing only the very week I am in the US visiting my sister for Christmas. But maybe this will end the embargo and I can watch it on Erosnow, at least. (They actually love Aamir here. Three Idiots was reasonably popular).

I took some Bollywood virgins to see Dear Zindagi and they really enjoyed it. One friend commented how she was leery of the length of the film going in, but how she appreciated the slower pace of it -- Contrasting it to Hollywood films that rush to fit the story in. It's a nice crossover type film to show newbies. I have been going to a Bollywood Dance class, and I hosted a movie night, showing Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (of course, since it's about a dance class). I had one newbie to Hindi films, and two Indian friends from the class. As I was explaining things to the newbie -- rain means passion in Indian cinema because of the Monsoon rains bringing "release" -- the Indian friends were amazed. "We need to watch all Indian films with you!" And they loved my DDLJ pillow. I am quite the curiosity to them, someone non-Desi who knows quite a bit about Indian cinema. I really like Befikre. I knew I would like Ranveer, but Vaani Kapoor was a pleasant surprise. LOVED their dancing together! Full review (spoiler free) here.

Banjo - was OK but I was fixated with the hairline of Ritesh's wig and the size of Nargis Fakhri's lips (are they getting bigger??). For any of you who follow the 2 Foreigners in Bollywood facebook page - one of them has a very small speaking role near the end of the movie - as a US customs/immigration official. As mentioned in the Filmfare board - Kahaani 2. Saw with a friend and we both liked it. It was gripping with a few little twists. Dil Aashna Hai - because it is one of SRK's early film roles. Aaargh - those ghastly, juvenile women's costumes that the 90s were so fond of. Dishoom - enjoyable silliness Some laugh out loud moments for me. Dilwale - a re-watch.

Will have to wait for DVD for Dear Zindagi and Befkire. I'll know I'll love both. Very excited about the strong reviews that Vaani Kapoor is getting. I really liked her in Shuddh Desi Romance and felt bad for her when she was taking so much crap about her cosmetic surgery. She's far more interesting to me than the other new women in Bollywood (like Kriti and Shraddha). Also still rooting for Athiya Shetty and for a Vidya Balan-style career in Hindi films for Taapsee Pannu.

I tried Banjo this weekend and could barely make it through the first scene with Nargis. I'm actually sort of a secret Nargis fan (based solely on her performance in Main Tera Hero, Spy, and the Kick song), so I'm a little sad she's turning away from Bollywood. But it looks like she's still doing a film with Rajkumar Rao? Yet again, I'm jealous of those that see the movies the week of release. Kahaani 2 is one of my most anticipated. Also enjoyed the silliness of Dishoom. Not a keeper but it was very enjoyable.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil - Production values and glamour quotient 10/10, ridiculous ending 0/10. Anushka Sharma can do no wrong, Ranbir Kapoor needs to retire the spoiled crybaby thing after this tour-de-force version of it. Aishwarya was perfect in the role, but kept her distance from the audience. I think the ending was unnecessary and wish that Karan Johar would have done something a little less cliche to achieve the emotional resolution. But, what am I thinking, despite the maturity in other aspects of the film, this is still the director/writer that gave us the first half of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Fawad Khan's role was disappointing as was his bad facial hair. SRK's cameo seemed incongruous with the rest of the film, but he looked good and I definitely want to see a reunion with Aishwarya on film.
Tried to watch Banjo - music is really catchy but not very good otherwise.
Also made it through about 2/3 of Tevar. On an Arjun Kapoor kick and the first half was fine, but the second half (and Sonakshi's damsel in distress acting...she knew the role was crap and her acting shows that) was terrible. A shame because I like their jodi in theory.

A shame because I like their jodi in theory. You got further into Tevar than I did. I have tried to watch it a couple of times but didn't get very far. Aaja Nachle - loved this, particularly the play at the end. I thought how much younger Madhuri (I know the movie is nearly 10 years old) looked with a softer make-up and looser, more casual hair (especially in the first scenes of her rehearsing her dancers) compared with some of her movies. And another I just loved - Barfi - just delightful.

Finished Do Anjaane and it was quite a ride. Rekha really makes you want to up your highlighter game, and she looks beautiful in the first part of the movie where she has a more demure and old fashioned looked. Amitabh, also, looks smashing in kurta pajama. The second part of the movie they are both looking very 70s with mixed success. Rekha literally matches the curtains at one point and Amitabh is disguised with a fake beard, which makes no sense because there's no reason for him not to just grow a beard. (Except I guess it makes more dramatic sense for someone to rip a fake beard off during his big reveal than make everyone wait for him to go shave or something). I will discuss the meat of the film in the next paragraph, because it's vaguely spoilery, if you can spoil a movie made in 1976.
The movie starts off with a bang, but for a long time in the middle I thought it was a more sensitive look at problems in a marriage. The movie seems to put the blame on both of them: Amitabh is a mean and embarrassing drunk, he doesn't seem good with money, and he made Rekha give up her career. Rekha whines a bit about living in poverty and isn't real sensible about things. But no--turns out those things are all Rekha's fault! There is a brief mention of Amitabh's responsibility in the breakdown of their relationship at the very end, but Rekha is really humiliated and we aren't supposed to have any sympathy for her.
Was considering watching Banjo this weekend--sounds like I can give it a pass! Thanks, everyone, for saving me some time.

Another movie that is just delightful - Stanley Ka Dabba
Paromitar Ek Din - Bengali movie *ing Aparna Sen, Rituparna Sengupta & Soumitra Chatterjee. Also directed by Aparna Sen. Looking at the dynamics within a family, the friendship between mother/daughter-in-law and also loneliness. Very good movie.
And also The Stoneman Murders - a fictional account of the unsolved murders in Mumbai in the 1980s.

Putting it on the list for the weekend. Did you like The Stoneman Murders? i can't decide whether to watch it or not. I really like Kay Kay Menon, though.
