Another movie that is just delightful - Stanley Ka Dabba
Paromitar Ek Din - Bengali movie *ing Aparna Sen, Rituparna Sengupta & Soumitra Chatterjee. Also directed by Aparna Sen. Looking at the dynamics within a family, the friendship between mother/daughter-in-law and also loneliness. Very good movie. And also The Stoneman Murders - a fictional account of the unsolved murders in Mumbai in the 1980s. Oh, Paromitar Ek Din sounds perfect for me: Bengali, family dynamics, Aparna Sen. Putting it on the list for the weekend. Did you like The Stoneman Murders? i can't decide whether to watch it or not. I really like Kay Kay Menon, though. Yes, it was good - they came up with a hypothetical result which was interesting. I didn't find Kay Kay's character terribly likeable even though he is the protagonist. Maybe a notch down from Raman Raghav 2.0.

I saw Dangal last night! Two thumbs up! Full review here, The young actresses were really great. I also realized that I owned another Naga Chaitanya and Samantha movie that I'd bought in a bundle some months ago. Ye Maaya Chesave (What Magic Have You Done). Sweet romantic early film for both actors. Full review here.

Bajirao Mastani - only a year late, lol. I wanted to test streaming from ErosNow to my new Chromecast gadget.
1000 Rupee Note - on Netflix. Charming story about an elderly village woman who is given some 1000 rupee notes (before demonetisation, lol) by a local politician and is thwarted in her attempts to spend them.
Also on Netflix - Humsafar - the Pakistani TV series that starred Fawad Khan. So far have only watched the first episode.
I hope to see Dangal next week.

Rowdy Rathore (2012) : could have been better without those fights and immoral way to make justice.
As I am rewriting French subs for the delicious Dil Bole Hadippa! (2009) , I was wondering what Rohan says to Veera when he leaves her (after "Understood?") Can you help me?

Not only is Humsafar on Netflix, but also the excellent Zindagi Gulzar Hai (Life is a Rose Garden). Both star Fawad Khan, and Humsafar has Mahira Khan who will debut opposite SRK in Raees. I am SO excited to be able to watch Zindagi Gulzar Hai in HD with glorious subtitles! I was never able to find subs for a few of the episodes. Also, on Netflix is Mahira Khan's other soap Saqday Tumharay.

A mid-afternoon session and the cinema was very nearly full (which could partly be due to post-Christmas shopping sales in the shopping centre where the multiplex is located). I normally book tickets online but my cineclub membership was due for renewal and I was unable to login - anyway did the renewal at the ticket desk and we were seated in the 5th row from the front. Slight danger of a cricked neck but I survived. The movie was just so good A definite for re-watching sometime. My only gripe - a small one - Geeta's opponent in the gold medal match/tussle/bout/fight (whatever it is called in wrestling) was not convincing as an Australian... - the teeniest of gripes.

Dangal tonight. Terrific sports biopic. Aamir was compelling, per usual, and the four ladies who played Geeta and Babita deserve to split Filmfare's Best Female Debut award! And I loved the soundtrack...Pritam is growing on me.
First half was a bit problematic for me--it seemed very anti feminist for Mahavir to force his daughters to wrestle for the sake of his own goals--but once it was clear the girls were wrestling for their own glory, it got much better.

Back from the States again. I saw Phobia on the plane and again fell asleep repeatedly and had to keep skipping back and forth. I really like Radhika in it but either it has a large plot hole or I missed something big with all the skipping. I hope it's the latter, because otherwise I think it's a good movie. I generally avoid horror movies because I don't want to spend several days sleeping with my lights on afraid to get up and go to the bathroom, but this isn't that kind of horror at all. It has sort of a Black Swan level of scariness. It's also very funny in spots.
Last night I saw Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania which is a nice old-fashioned Karan Johar romcom moderned up with a bit of sex. It makes you remember DDLJ fondly without being a copy. My new years resolution to watch more Alia is coming along very nicely so far and next will be Udta Punjab, which is now on Netflix Japan.

MS Dhoni - Way too long and I'm not sure about the premise of doing a biopic on someone who isn't even 40 yet! SSR was very good and I really liked Kiara Advani in her small role and I don't understand why the fuss about the other actress. I did like the fact that Dhoni's story was not a story of such awful trials and tribulations that he had to overcome...it was a story about hard work, perseverance, and how your family, friends, and community help you along the way and are invested in your success, too.
Dear Zindagi - Maybe slightly disappointed because my expectations were so high. It's a nice story that deals with real issues that many can relate to. It's very Good Will Hunting to me. Alia Bhatt is really talented, but I think her Udta Punjab performance was better.
And I watched Steve Jobs, which was brilliant, and Bridget Jones's Baby, which I absolutely adored. I don't watch as many Hollywood films anymore and it was a nice change of pace.

Ki aur Ka - I liked this one. Kareena and Arjun were cute together. I liked Amitabh’s and Jaya’s cameo - Jaya always looks like such a sourpuss in pictures that it’s always a surprise when she smiles. And for the record, I would definitely marry a man who wanted to be a househusband - I’d have absolutely no qualms about it nor would I feel embarazsed afterall, the whole point of feminism was to change society so that women could work outside the home if they wanted to and men could stay and work inside the home if that’s what they want.
Teen - The acting was great - not just from the three leads where you expect it; everyone, including the smalllest part was good. A very well-made little film . I have to admit that I did not see most of the twists comimg. I liked it but I’m not gushing about it because I didn’t like the ending.

The 2 TV series on Netflix - Zindagi Gulzar Hai and Humsafar. I wanted to give the characters a smack in both of them at one point or another but, overall, enjoyed both.
Lion - excellent. I had been warned that a box of tissues would be necessary but I was OK, only dabbing a couple of times with my handkerchief. Was happy to see Nawazuddin Siddiqui & Tanishtha Chatterjee were in it - only for a short time though and they both played sinister roles.
Ram Jaane - have got about half way through but it isn't very good and I don't know whether I'll continue with it.
Jhoom Barabar Jhoom - quite enjoyed this and what isn't there to like about the Big B as a wandering troubadour giving a bit of narration in song every now & then.
Raees - thought this was very good. Mahira Khan matched SRK very well. I thought it might have ended slightly differently though.

Shamitabh - Some of this was really way out there (including medicie that can only be found in Bollywood). I enjoyed this one. I liked seeing Dhanush and Big B pitting their wits/egos against each other. The music was forgetable (read pretty bad). One last comment - an item song with toilets? Who thinks of these things? Ok it was quite funny.
PK - I was a bit wary about watching this since I had met a woman who loves Aamir and she said that he wasn’t good in this; I’m not too fond of Aamir as it is. However he wasn’t as bad as I feared - he wasn’t good but at least he wasn’t irriitating. I wish that he would stop with the wide eyed acting; I realise that he did this in order to convey that the character was innocent and naive but he just looked slow. It semed to me that a lot of thought went into the external characteristics of the character (the way he walks, his clothes even the wide eyes) but not nearly as much effort was spent on making him seem real - he just didn’t feel real to me. Anoushka and Sushant were so cute. I liked the actor who played “his holiness;” Sanjay Dutt’s cameo was a pleasant surprise. At times (especially when they were showing how religion takes advantge of people) the film dragged but, overall, I enjoyed it.
Happy Bhaag Jayegi - This was fun and pleasant but I think that I was expecting a bit more colour, more of a story, more dance numbers. At times it felt like they stretched the story in order for it to run for two hours. I think this is the first time I’ve seen Jimmy Shergill dance in a movie.

PK - [...]Aamir wasn’t as bad as I feared - he wasn’t good but at least he wasn’t irriitating. I wish that he would stop with the wide eyed acting Well, first time I saw the movie, he irritated me! And I discovered it was not his wide opened eyes, but the fact that he doesn't breathe. And that's why you can find his character not credible. Breathe is life. An actor who keeps his breath inside doean't play with his body, his heart; he's just a head speaking word as in a book. And in this case, I prefer to read a book! Bawarchi (1972): I had seen already a few movies with Rajesh Khanna, but it's the first time he impressed me so much. He plays a cook, so humble, so gentle, so beneficial, so peaceful... Somewhere he reminds me Peter Sellers in "Being there". But... is the cook a crook? The pace is a bit slow, songs are pleasant to hear, the actors play well, the girls are nice dancers (one of Jaya Bhaduri's first movies), the film could have been just an average movie. But what make it really good are the last 15 minutes. An ending both joyful and sad.

Raees. Very good. SRK placed himself on '70s Amitabh level with a performance and a film that very much resembled classics like Zanjeer and Deewaar. (A treat, then, when we see young Big B during one scene on a screen at a drive in movie theater.) It dragged a little, and at times was hard to follow, but overall, a bloody thriller that should earn SRK major kudos. Nawaz was good as well--he always is--but overshadowed, naturally, by Shahrukh's larger than life performance. Mahira Khan did well as a newcomer; strong and beautiful and infectious all at once.
Also, the little boy who played young Raees at the beginning was Absolutely Precious. And it's always nice to hear Sonu Nigam on a soundtrack.

Befikre - the ultimate light entertainment, with absolutely beautiful Paris scenery and the on-screen charisma of Ranveer and a super sophomore performance by Vaani Kapoor. I thought their chemistry was quite good and their dancing was incredible. There were missteps in tone at times and I don't think it was ground breaking at all for A. Chopra...it honestly felt a little stale plotwise after Shuddhi Desi Romance and OK Kanmani. Just a nice Bollywood rom-com with French flare that I will rewatch happily for the overall polished package
Haramkhor - tried to watch this but was so bored, despite usually being entranced by Siddiqui's skills...I like indie, character-driven films, too, but this one starts too far in the middle of the story and then cannot sustain interest
Road, Movie - rewatched and enjoyed it even more for its surreal quality and band of misfits charm
Tamasha - rewatched and still hated the framing play...it's just terrible. Some of the emotional scenes are well done, though, and I am always rooting for Imtiaz Ali to do something less pretentious related to self knowledge and being true to yourself. Ranbir and Deepika both seem to be lost at times in finding the right note for their performances and I bet Ali's direction was all over the place.
