Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara
An OK timepass, perhaps even good - however what ironically shoots a nearly fatal bullet into the body of this film is the fact they decided to sell it as a sequel of something much superior and different. It would stand better as a completely new film with new characters. In any case Akshay Kumar would be a miscast. He has nothing of the terrifying unpredictability Emraan Hashmi had in the first movie, however ANYONE would be a bad choice because Emraan is simply too etched into everybody´s minds in this avatar. Akshay is way also way too "in your face", to the point of theatrical as a nasty gangster, in spite of monotonous dialogue delivery. The man can do so much better. Imran is OK, Sonakshi looks gorgeous and does well, one just wishes she would take on more challenging projects. Sonali Bendre has exactly three scenes and is great in all. One wishes there was more of her and Akshay. After all, the whole film moved on from struggle for power over Mumbai to intimate and romantic spheres, so to see more of their relationship would only make sense.

John, Ally, my assessment of OUATIMD after seeing it in the theater was pretty much the same as yours: bland, but acceptable romantic melodrama, of a kind that was already old-school when Akki was in short pants. I'm going to rewatch it on einthusan soonish to see how I feel about buying it.
As someone who followed the OUATIMD filming and promotions pretty closely, I got the impression that neither Ekta Kapoor nor Milan Luthria had any clear idea of what they wanted, and that although the cast enjoyed working on it (check out "making of Chugliyaan" on youtube for some behind-the-scenes silliness) they had pretty much concluded this project was doomed by the time the first trailer launched in May (with reshoots and dubbing still in progress).
Sonali's scenes convinced me that not even the middle-aged male stars are all that happy about the fact that they're expected to play opposite women 15+ years their junior. There's no denying that Akshay likes and gets along with Sonakshi and has good chemistry with her, but he's about 500 times more comfortable in the scenes with Sonali. Pity she either doesn't want to work in films that badly or her husband doesn't want her to.

Shootout at Wadala
Unnecessary violence and vulgarity are two greatest impressions I had from this film. Lots of guys getting out of cars, smoking cigarettes, killing someone, getting into cars, smoking cigarettes. It starts with a quite good story – both our hero and our villain share in retrospective what led to the filmi present from their point of view, however in the second part the storyline diappears and it all becomes a big celebration of boom and bang bang. The journey of an innocent who becomes the greatest gangster in Mumbai is not well presented – the transformation is never shown and also his later progress in the climb to the top is not explored. It all looks so damn easy one could think if I decide tommorow that I wanna rule somewhere all I need is six filthy looking guys and an intense stare.
Women only appear in short intervals so our protagonists can bed them or salivate over their semi-clad bodies. Priyanka Chopra is shooting bullets from her boobs and the rest of item numbers I am not even going into. Out of the actors Anil Kapoor is the saving grace. Sonu Sood and Manoj Bajpayee as brothers are good, menacing, but rather wasted. John Abraham is as frightening as a pudding, and even outacted by Tusshar Kapoor who is decent as a filthy, small-time criminal.
Very regressive in sentiment, disappointing overal and full of poetic speeches from the cops. There is no emotional connect with any of the characters, least of all the main protagonist. Starts as decent, continues as average and ends in a gutter.

BesharamAfter drowning us with tears in emotional Rockstar, warming our hearts with delightful Barfi and entertaining us with romantic YJHD Ranbir Kapoor has apparently decided it was time to screw his reputation with Besharam. He is without a doubt my most favourite actor from the new generation (yes, even after this film), but truth to be told that only made the whole matter worse. I admit - I was not as apalled and horrified as I probably should have been, because apalled and horrified reviews kept coming from all sides and my expectations hit rock bottom. When I found some himmat to watch, I was ready for the WORST. My whole review: bollywood-ish.blogspot.cz/2013/12/besharam.html

Satya 2 - tense, thriller type movie with the hero(?) being a psychopath who bumps off everyone in his way. Not sure that his method is a solution to the problem...

Laawaris (1981), by Prakash Mehra, with Big B and Zeenat Aman Not so worthy, despite Amitabh's very good acting.

Jhoom Barabar Jhoom
I don´t think I have ever seen a film with less of a story than this. NOTHING happens in the first 80 minutes. NOTHING. The last hour I found, against my better judgement, quite funny and enjoyable, which however may be the result of the NOTHING happening before and so just a hint of a twist and plot was very much a relief. Bobby Goldilocks is way more entertaining and convincing than Abhishek (who just seems a caricature throughout and one really wonders why would anyone fall in love with him and that too only after two hours of lying), and Lara Dutta is just spectacular to look at. I was hoping the epic dance sequence that really serves as a climax would actually BE epic, but the choreography was quite simplistic and poor - and neither of four actors are natural dancers to save the day. Amitabh Bachchan in a hideous getup kept popping out here and there and everywhere singing the same song and making the crowds go wow, but one could hardly think of a less worthy cameo. Oh, parental love.....
All in all I didn´t completely dislike it, as I said the last 40 or so minutes were fun, and in the first half there was a really beautiful song Bol Na Halke Halke (which told a story in approximately 5 minutes and those 5 minutes were more interesting than everything else). A superficial, harmless movie without a plot.

Lakeer ( the line) (2004) Avoid ! Nothing much to keep from this very bad movie, where gangters make the law, hit or kill each other with impunity. Unreel scenes, disjointed editing, stupid slow motions... Some songs by Rahman are good, and actors try to do their best. 8/20

3 Idiots So glad I decided to give this another chance, two years later! It's really an entertaining and meaningful movie (although it does beat its message into the ground, as expected from a mainstream Bollywood movie). Aamir was the weak link here imo, and this would have been made even better by some heavy editing, especially in the second half. Had a movie night with some BW newbies and converted two of them - or at least, made them much more open to watching Indian films in the future.
Lootera Astoundingly good performances, particularly in the second half. There's a scene involving a bullet that erased any doubts in my mind that Ranveer is going to be a superstar. Cinematography and music are lovely but I wasn't as intrigued by the story as I wanted to be, and the pacing is indeed slow. But I was moved nonetheless. It kept my interest but I don't feel any strong desire to watch it again, aside from a few really good scenes. Udaan is more memorable to me.
Shuddh Desi Romance This one, I loved! Great characterizations portrayed by two young actors I adore (and a third who looks promising), loved the setting in Jaipur and the down to earth feel of the whole thing. The characters and their choices are very relatable. Not to mention this one is laugh out loud funny, especially in the first half (which is arguably more fun than the second, although the movie pretty much manages to maintain its momentum to the very end). I know Bollywood has been pushing the envelope over the past decade but this one takes the cake, because it features independent women and nontraditional relationships and DOESN'T make a huge deal about it. On the other hand it could be said that it's a little TOO undramatic and would have benefited from some more tension. Also, while I enjoyed the songs the dancing was out of place. Gets extra points for having some of the best kisses in a BW movie! In short, fun and funny but not flimsy. I highly recommend!
