That a mention of Patiala House has just turned up in my Twitter feed is not so surprising. That it's come courtesy of fellow pinko Commie (and extremely white Angrezi), Mark Steel, is... Mark's a cricket fan, so you just wait until he finds out that Trent Bridge cricket ground in Nottingham has suddenly and mysteriously been shifted to London (and that it takes less than five minutes to drive there from Southall!). PS: Special mention to one of his tweeps who replied that he was now watching 'Bowlywood'. *groan*
ETA: Mark offering a possible re-write... For those that don't know, he's referring to Andrew 'Freddy' Flintoff, former England fast bowler, and Geoff Boycott, very very former England batsman and long-time expert commentator for BBC Radio's 'Test Match Special'. I'd pay quite good money to see/hear Boycs singing around a tree in Punjabi, as it happens.

That's pretty trippy, Xas.
In other news, supposedly the animated primetime series (read: not-child-friendly humor) American Dad namedropped Akshay Kumar but I haven't seen the clip yet.
In still other news, the More Casual Fan told me that a US cable channel had run a movie with young Amitabh Bachchan recently, but it was late at night and the MCF wasn't able to stay up and watch...
MCF: "They said it was one of his Angry Young Man movies." Me: "Was there a guy with a red beard in it?" MCF: "I didn't see one. It was some kind of cops and gangsters thing." Me: "Was [ Amitabh] a cop or a crook." MCF: "Cop." Me: "Might have been Zanjeer..." MCF: "Zanjeer! That was the title! Do you have it?" Me: "No, but I know where I can get it...we'll watch it sometime."

That's pretty trippy, Xas. Mark's opinion of the film was that it was "marvellous but utterly utterly ridiculous", which is kind of how I feel about it (and I had the benefit of subtitles, which Mark didn't). I wonder if that means we've got another BW convert? Also, I'd love to eavesdrop on some of your BW coversations with MCF, I really would.

New book: AN APPETITE FOR WONDER: The Making of a Scientist, by Richard Dawkins Yes, the evolutionary biologist (The Selfish Gene) and militant atheist (The God Delusion). This book describes his upbringing and education. Of interest to us is the second paragraph on page 154:
"... The best cricketer ... the Nawab of Pataudi ("Tiger"), the Oxford captain and my exact contemporary at Balliol. As a batsman, the effortless way he steered the ball to outwith the fielders was sublime. But it was as a fielder himself that he especially impressed me. On one occasion a batsman hit the ball and called for what must have seemed like an easy run. Then he noticed that the fielder charging down upon the ball was Tiger Pataudi, and he frantically shrieked to his partner to go back to his crease."

I was assisting a patient last week, wheelchair bound, possible CP - sister taking her around to her tests. The person who passed them to me was semi-exasperated, with the "she doesn't speak English" hand off ( not defending it, but English-Vinglish does have roots in reality). Asked what primary language, sister sighed, "Urdu" like, yeah sure like that'll mean anything to you. OMG moment on her part when I addressed them with a greeting and a small comment.
Test went good, went to help the young lady off the exam table, heard the sister muttering "one, two, three" as you do in assisted lifts, which prompted me to say "ek, do, teen" - they both grinned and the sister said " this is a famous song ", and STARTED SINGING it for me! I said "oh, yeah, Madhuri", got the OMG look again and silly little grin from the patient. Yes, we had a moment, which I would not have had without Bollywood and this forum.

^ Erm. Aish vicariously (and probably unknowingly) selling beef? Are they allowed to do that?? As for my own BW in Unexpected Places...when you're innocently watching the Cardinals play the Titans (American Football), and the commentator keeps insisting that John Abraham is playing*. *Which he was, but the John Abraham I know would never make it as a linebacker, no matter how musclebound he is.

Yet again, on Broadwaystars.com, the biggest website for theatre in North America, the tickertape on top announces today's birthdays - Hrithik Roshan and Ray Bolger. It never fails to surprise me when I see the BW names up there(it happened a couple of times before), since I'm pretty sure very few of the regular theatregoers have ever heard of them. Happy 40th Birthday Hrithik! Hope 2014 is a much better year for him.

In other news, supposedly the animated primetime series (read: not-child-friendly humor) American Dad namedropped Akshay Kumar but I haven't seen the clip yet. I don't recall the episode, but they DID do a name drop. I believe he called him talented and such. American Dad also had a James Bond episode with the theme song from the old Don film. I suspect they have some Desi writers. In our small town, we just had an Indian store with loads of Bollywood movies open up. So that was unexpected.

At the USA Ice Skating Nationals, another Ice Dance team did a Bollywood Dance. Music began with Anarkali Disco Chalte, and ended with Dhoom Tana. She wore half-choli & mini-lehenga, as expected. He wore salwar-kameez, with an idol embroidered onto the salwar.
