Starting a new thread just to discuss Malayalam cinema. I have to agree with bollylitsa that Malayalam cinema has some of the best Indian films I've seen. bollylitsa, I sought out the Tamil movie OK Kanmani because I heard A R Rahman in concert play the song Mental Manadhil from the film. I follow some South Indian Tumblr's and that's how I got introduced to more of Malayalam star Dulquer Salmaan and then Nivin Pauly. I followed them because of Baahubali, but then saw all the GIF's from Bangalore Days and OK Kanmani. Midukki, a young Malayalam girl on Tumblr gave me a recommended list of Malayalam films. I loved both Bangalore Days and just recently watched Ustad Hotel which was fantastic. (I was very amused to find out Dulquer is a graduate of Purdue as my son is a freshman there this year!) I totally agree that the movies are more realistic than Bollywood or what I've seen of Tamil, and especially in contrast to Telugu films. I have to admit I was not a big fan of Mili, but really enjoyed the female coming of age film Om Shanti Oshaana with Nivin Pauly and Nazriya Nazim. I'm looking forward to seeing Prenam. What are some of your favorite Malayalam films? What should I add to my watch list?

The Wikipedia article on Malayalam Cinema is pretty good. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/malayalam_cinema The article talks about films shown, films made, Producers, Directors, Music, and Themes, Styles, Sources, and notable films. Finally it gets around to mentioning actors and actresses. It says that Mollywood spent several decades after Independence in Chennai. Then it moved to Kochi and Trivandrum, Kerala. I deem that the most important actors were T. S. Nair, Sathyan, Prem Nazir, Mammooty, and Mohanlal. IMO leading actresses were Kumari Thankam, Padmini, Ragini (more so than Lalitha), Ambika Sukamaran, K R Vijaya, Sheela, Sharada, Jayabharathi, and Kaviyoor Ponnamma. Notable Age Differences: Sathyan, born 1912, frequently had jodis with Sheela, Sharada, and Kaviyoor, all born in 1945. Dancelover

Thanks for creating this thread moviemavengal ! Well, I am no expert in Malayalam cinema unfortunately. My system on deciding which movie to watch next is quite simple, find an actor I obsess about and then try to locate their filmography So, I will suggest based on actors: (apart from Dulquer Salmaan and Nivin Pauly) Nithya Menen, Nazriya Nazim, Prithviraj Sukumaran and Fahadh Faazil seem to have a great body of work. Mind you, I haven't watched most of their movies but I want to. Also, Urumi is an older movie, directed by Santosh Sivan (he also did Asoka with SRK) and a great cast, is very nice. It's a historical (?) and has great photography. Here's the trailer: Can you send me the list of suggested movies you found in Tumblr? Lastly, I have a question/suggestion: could we organize something like a film club, where we suggest movies to watch and then comment on them? I think I will be more motivated like that to pick good movies! PS: Did you watch OK Kanmani in Malayalam? I thought it was only in Tamil. Also, I think Nithya Menen outshined Dulquer in this one, she was amazing! what do you think?

1 Actors' Filmographies can be found in their Wikipedia articles. (I luv Wikipedia!) 2 Soon you will notice: all of Bollywhat is very like such a film club. It was originally set up for that, as well as to explain Bollywood to us newbies. (yes, I am still a newbie) Dancelover I left those two of Bollylitsa's statements unsnipped, but the machine removed them anyway. Edited to re-insert them. D. Silly machine! Please see bollylitsa's post above.

Thanks for creating this thread moviemavengal ! PS: Did you watch OK Kanmani in Malayalam? I thought it was only in Tamil. Also, I think Nithya Menen outshined Dulquer in this one, she was amazing! what do you think? bollylitsa is correct -- OK Kanmani is in Tamil, although it stars the Malayalam star Dulquer Salmaan. My next door neighbor is South Indian and she watched OK Kanmani without subtitles, and said that Dulquer's accent was so heavy she couldn't understand his Tamil at all! (Tamil is not her first language to begin with, but it is her husband's.) I've edited my first post to reflect that correction. But OK Kanmani is what led me to Malayalam films because of Dulqer. Like many of us, you watch one film and then try to track down other films by the same actor. I did think Nithya was amazing, but Dulquer is a cutie pie!!

I will pick "ohm shanti oshaana" to watch tonight and tell you how I found it! PS: How do you put all those cute GIFs in your posts? bollylitsa we're very glad you find us, too!! I'm no expert on Malayalam films, but I've really enjoyed the ones I've watched so far. I like all regions of Indian cinema for different things, but I like the realism in Malayalam films and the sweetness of the romances. Also some of them are female centered, which is a refreshing change. I heartily agree with your choice of Ohm Shanti Oshaana which is completely from the female point of view. I watched it just a couple weeks ago and I loved it. I purchased it on Google Play so that I could download it to my iPad to watch on a flight. It is also available for rental. I think most of Midukki's free watch links for Malayalam films are on einthusan. I've had good and sometimes very bad luck watching on that site. Sometimes it's fine, and you just deal with the ads, but trying to watch a popular film on a weekend night can be a stop and start nightmare (which happened with Bangalore Days, so I bought the DVD so I can watch it properly.) Here's what I wrote about Ohm Shanti Oshaana on the Latest Films watched thread: As to Gif's. You figured out how to post a youtube video, and it's very similar, just posting using an online link for an image. GIF's count as an image file, and you can use the same procedure for any image online. I find my GIF's on Tumblr. Most people who make them tag them by the actor name, the movie title, or both so you can search for them easily. This is me on Tumblr, btw. I don't create GIF's, but I repost all the ones I like! And I keep track of my films watched on Letterboxd.com. I have a special list on there called Beyond Bollywood, which includes all the Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, etc. films I've seen. It's short, but growing! I have a separate Bollywood list, and a Shahrukh Khan list, too!

Nazriya Nazim is 20 years old, 21 in December 2015, a year younger than Alia Bhatt, and looks younger, so she could play 16 and 22 in the same film.
A Wikipedia editor posted a note warning that her Wiki-article seems to be written by a fan. Me, I didn't see much more fan-cheering than most Wiki-articles, which are Labors Of Love after all!

New Trailer for Charlie, Parvarthy and Dulquer Salmaan's new film:
Have no idea what's going on, but that is an intriguing trailer! Not a fan of DQ's beard, however.

Just saw Pattam Pole, ONLY for Dulqer Salmaan and was greatly dissapointed... especially his character was awful... this is the first bad movie of his that I am watching, and I saw it with a friend with the intention to brag about how wonderful he is... Well, I guess it happens to every good actor... has anyone seen this? or have inside info about how he got the decision to film this...?
The songs were nice though...
I will be in Kerala after January 25, do u think I will catch his new film Charlie in the theatres by then?
