I watched Innale - classic Malayalam gem from 1990. Shobana stars as a victim of a big bus crash who suffers from amnesia. She falls in love with the son of her doctor, and then a person from her past tries to find her. Shobana is absolutely luminous. If you have an ErosNow subscription, it's available there with subs. Traffic is a 2010 Malayalam hyperlink movie hit. The same director remade the movie in Hindi, and it's coming out May 6th. Traffic was one of the first movies in the New Wave movement in Malayalam Cinema, with urban themes (vs. rural village), and complex women characters (one is a divorcee.) Full thoughts here on my blog.

I've been watching quite a bit of Malayalam cinema lately! I saw Kali in the theater, and really, really enjoyed it. Dulquer Salmaan is acting on a whole new level in this film. The first half focuses on his marriage and his difficulties in controlling his anger (Kali means Rage) at work and at home. The second half is a taut thriller. I was on the edge of my seat. Full review here on my blog.![]()

The Bollywood Project podcast girls have become massive Dulquer Salmaan fans. They did a bonus episode about Malayalam cinema that you might want to check out. They tweeted about it, and Dulquer Salmaan replied!

Count me in as another DQ fan and I am also in the process of watching as many Malayalam films as possible. Until glomming all of DQ's films after seeing him in OK Kanmani, I had really only ever seen Urumi (which I own) and I did love Prithviraj in Raavanan and Aiyaa, so I was always curious about Mollywood. Also really love Nithya Menen and can't wait to see more of her films.
So far I've seen Charlie, Bangalore Days, and Ustad Hotel and loved them all. I couldn't get into Premam, but I do like that actor.
Whenever I reach a saturation point in Hindi films (or I've run out of new releases or oldies that I want to see), I turn to more regional cinema. I only really have a couple of favs from the Tamil and Telugu industries and Bengali films have yet to move me (I consider myself a fan of art cinema but so far the Bengali films I've seen have left me cold). So glad I've found Malayalam cinema. I, too, really like the realistic acting and stories!
Keep the recs coming...I'm about to watch Anarkali with Prithviraj...anyone seen this one?
