I just came across this site - www.learning-hindi.com - which for a beginner seems great. I've picked up some words from watching BW movies and can say a phrase as long as it's a movie title or a line from a song but would not know where to start stringing a sentence together. This site breaks things down into short lessons and explains Hindi sentence structure amongst other things. It provides conversational phrases as well as a more detailed grammar. I have it bookmarked and will attempt to work my way through the lessons - now to buy a notebook to practice the script.

Hatufim sounds very interesting. This is the first time I have heard about it. It is interesting and gripping. Not always 'enjoyable' because of the traumatic situation shown in flashback but excellent drama.

You may or may not know that Australia's national summer sport is cricket. Since Jan 26th is Australia Day and Indian Republic Day I watched Lagaan - even though I'm not terribly interested in cricket...

Saw a trailer for this today - being released here in the next month or two - looked as though it would be worth watching. Shaadi Ke Side EffectsAlso saw a trailer for Dr Cabbie - starring Vinay Vermani. Looked amusing too - a young newly qualified doctor moves to Canada but can only get work driving a taxi. Dr. Cabbie

Jai Ho - Jai Ho hum for me. I probably wouldn't watch it again. It starts with what I call a cartoon fight scene (much breaking of glass and furniture but no-one gets hurt) but later escalates into real biffo with people getting shot, stabbed, bashed and the works. A bit too much of the one army....it did get a bit tiresome, IMHO. There was also the slightly over acted comedy element, the psychotic politician and his henchmen including the bad cops, plenty of good guys and the feisty kid - played by Naman Jain who was also a standout in Bombay Talkies. Maybe one or two too many songs....but that's just my opinion.

Borgen, 2nd series is coming to an end here this week so there will be a hole in my Wednesday evening viewing. Another program I have been watching over the last few months on a Wednesday evening is Hatufim (Prisoners of War), 2nd series, a gripping Israeli series about 3 Israeli soldiers who had been held captive for 17 years by an unfriendly group. In the first series 2 (Uri & Nimrod) of the soldiers and the supposed body of the third (Amiel) are repatriated in a prisoner exchange and we follow the problems Uri & Nimrod (and their families) face as they slowly adjust to life back home. The second series shows us what happened to Amiel...
I believe a third series has been made so look forward to seeing it.
The US series Homeland was based on Hatufim.

Ship of Theseus - was watching this afternoon (on SominalTV) when the subtitles cut out at about an hour before the end at the start of the third character story. Hopefully they will get that sorted out and I'll carry on with it another day.

Shorts (2013) - a compilation of 5 short (20 minutes or so) thought provoking movies. The first concerns a woman who has been tormented and threatened by her male cousin for most of her life. She is driven to drastic measures.
The second, which I found most puzzling, concerns a man (maybe/maybe not gay) seemingly being teased/provoked by the bizarre behaviour of a young woman - yet he seems to be indifferent to what is going on around him (or is he?)
The third - a teenage girl rebelling against her conservative father's wishes.
the fourth - Nawazuddin Siddiqi plays a man who illegally disposes of the dead during the night. He secretly admires a young woman... No spoilers...
The fifth - filmed in and around Dharavi, a woman toils to support her out-of-work husband, her shrew of a mother-in-law and her young son. Hubby has a near death experience - will his attitude change?
Death (or the threat of it) is a common thread and also in three of these shorts there is seen that archaic attitude of "I'm the man, you are the mere woman/wife. Your opinion/desires/happiness/whatever count for nothing".
More Art House than mainstream BW but worth watching if you can - I saw it on Spuul.

Rockstar - for the 4th time. Very much a case of 'be careful what you wish for...'
