What a great forum! I live in Japan but I'm an American. My first Bollywood experience was in 2007 when I was indisposed and stuck in my hotel room in Dhaka all day. That was the year Heyy Babyy came out, and the music video for Mast Kalandar was playing on an almost continuous loop on the television. That was the first time I saw Shah Rukh Khan. The search to see the whole movie led me to Jaman (RIP), where I found a lot of movies that are still favorites, like Chameli and Raincoat. (I eventually saw Heyy Babyy and discovered it's not a great film and SRK isn't even in it).
I watch mainstream movies but also like things on the Indie side of the spectrum. All-time favorites are Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, Kahaani, Band Baaja Baaraat, Wake Up Sid, and any classic with Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. Unfortunately everything from about 1970 to 2000 is a big blur to me (except DDLJ and KKHH), but I'm working on that. Most recent things I loved are Queen and Dum Laga ke Haisha, and I just finished Fanaa last night (and had really weird dreams about it).
Nice to meet all of you!

Welcome to the forum, Miss Braganza. Like you, I think I'm mainly a fan of mainstream films, but I do enjoy some of the parallel cinema, too. Looking forward to your posts, and I hope you enjoy your time here.

Welcome Miss Braganza!! I also adore Dum Laga ke Haisha, especially the soundtrack which I play all the time. Fanaa is kind of wild, isn't it? I had no idea what the title meant, so I was completely shocked with my mouth hanging open at the interval when the bomb blew up. What?? My friend who's been watching Hindi movies for much longer than me said I must be the only one in the world who was surprised by that. Once I watched it, I had to own it. Dekho Na, is one of my all time favorite song sequences.

Thanks for the welcome, everyone, and thanks emily for the kind words!
Moviemavengal, I accidentally read the end of Fanaa before I watched it, but it's still shocking following all the family dancing and singing. I know it wasn't made in the nineties, but it struck me as a nineties-like version of Lootera--with a little more dancing and singing and a plot that's just a smidge over the top. I quite enjoyed it. I know Kajol's not everyone's cup of tea but I just really enjoy watching her, and same with Aamir.
