In a thread about Dil Dhadakne Do, I was just writing about how much I enjoyed Farhan Akhtar, especially his dancing sequences in the film. My eyes always go to him when he's dancing on screen (even when he's dancing with Hrithik or Ranveer which is kind of crazy when you think about it...one's arguably the one of the best ever and the other is a big ball of energy).
So I was just wondering who people thought were the best dancers in Bollywood working right now? Filmigirl used to blog a bit about this topic a few years back and always found her choices so interesting (if I recall she really likes Arshad Warsi's dancing).
I would have to pick Shahid, Hrithik, and Ranbir Kapoor in that order, for the guys.
And Madhuri, Rani (I hope she still has some dancing roles ahead of her), and Kareena Kapoor (her style has grown on me over the years).
Hope this isn't a repetitive thread...I'm still new here:)

I'll second your guy list above and also add Govinda (though he's not given much to do lately, we all know how good he is and he's still semi-active) and Ranveer Singh, whose energy is irresistible. Ranveer may not be that great technically, but I really like his style.
For girls I'll certainly agree with you on Madhuri, who is just out of this world, really. I also like Priyanka's style (I'm a big "Ram Chahe Leela" fan) and Anushka Sharma (double points when she's paired with Ranveer!).
These might not be *best*, as I really know nothing about dance, but they're certainly my favorites to watch.

Malaika. Dehpika. Sophie Chaudry. Sunny Leone. Mumaith Khan, whenever she is up from the South. Speaking of up-from-the-South, Prabhu Deva! Perhaps you consider Aish "retired?" From dancing, anyway. She's 42 now. You did say "best *right now*". Otherwise, Waheeda Rehman, Helen and Vijayanthimala are still alive to be counted! Sridevi danced a bit in English Vinglish, though not to the extent of kicking up her heels. Dancelover Oh...I forgot Aishwarya. How could I!

Well she's still active in films...that was the criterium, I thought. Same reason why I added Govinda: doesn't do as much dancing as he used to, but is still active.
Like I said, I know next to nothing about technical proficiency in dancing. I'm just going off who catches my eye.

Aish is active again after four years of Maternity Leave. She has signed two movies, completed one of them. Let's see if she dances. Kajol, two years younger, does have at least one dance in Dilwale. Meanwhile, Internet Movie Database contributor "Vin Von" made a list for IMDb of "Best Indian Dancers in Films" choosing ten. Southerners definitely included! Vyjayanthimala, Helen, Padmini, Kamla Laxman*, Madhuri Dixit, Hema Malini, Kamal Hassan, Asha Parekh, Aishwarya Rai, Shriya Saran. If not for Kamal, it would be a list of all women. Edit: the first three responders suggested three more men: Puneeth Raj Kumar, Jr. NTR, and Chiranjeevi. Dancelover *IMBd credits her with appearing in eight (8) films from 1958 to 1961, and another in 1971. Wikipedia has no article on her. She seems to be Vin Von's own favorite. Hopefully we see some more actresses of the 90s like Karishma Kapoor, Urmila Matondkar, Manisha Koirala, and Raveena Tandon coming back with substantial roles in better quality films. Karishma's Dangerous Ishq was a disaster with a capital D, Urmila hasn't been seen in ages, Manisha is stuck with delayed B-grade releases, and Raveena is doing small-bit guest appearances.

For the guys, Hrithik is number one for me. I just love his dancing. Shahid and Ranbir come after him, but both are very good. Many of my favorites have already been mentioned for the women, but I really like Deepika of the younger actresses. I was lucky enough to see her perform live when SRK's SLAM tour came to Chicago. Of the young men, Ranveer has so much energy -- I can't tell you how many times I have watched that Tattad number from Ram Leela. Not that he is the best, but I also love Arjun Kapoor's Superman from Tevar -- almost best part of that whole movie, frankly. He did a great homage to several stars with that song at the Filmfare awards. But with Arjun it is more Tevar -- great attitude and posturing more than fancy footwork. I think of the very youngest crop of guys -- Varun Dhawan is the stand out. I would not recommend you see ABCD 2, but I did, and his athletic dancing style was really incredible. He was surrounded by some very talented other dancers in the group, and he held his own. Here's a sample -- it's a group number, but I think Varun still stands out: And this is a solo number from the movie:

Sunny Leone? I would personally rank her as one of the worst. She has minimal energy and doesn't look like she's even trying lol Of the active ladies I would have to say Priyanka (see Gun Gun Guna and Asalaam-e-Ishqum), Aishwarya (who was active in the era when women actually danced and didn't just pose) and Alia is also quite graceful. Of the men we have the usual suspects...Shahid and Hrithik of course. But I agree about Varun! I was watching him in Student of the Year and Humpty Sharma and was mesmerized by his style! He reminds me quite a lot of Shahid and I admire when men can actually dance in Bollywood because it's too rare that they are actually required to do so. I'm also a huge fan of Ranveer Singh's dancing. Please if you're unconvinced check out Thug Le and Tattad Tattad. He's a very precise dancer and makes him that much more attractive to me.

I do like Varun Dhawan's athletic dancing style and I think he's got a great future, but this movie was so awful. The first was sloppy, but was held together by heart and good dance sequences, this one was just stupid.

Not "right now" anymore, but in the first six years of this century, we might note that UDAY CHOPRA (!) was trusted to dance with Shamita Shettty, Esha Deol, and Bipasha Basu. Shamita and he were the best dancing young couple in Mohabbatein, and encored in Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hain. Esha & Bips were in the Dhoom films.
In Mujhse Dosti Karoge he danced on the same floor as Rani, Hrithrik, and Kareena.

In films, it's still Aishwarya, Hrithik, & Madhuri for me, but if I threw a party...Ranveer might be first on the invite-list.
