Just a thread to discuss your desi music listening habits outside of movie soundtracks. I've amassed a big collection of South Asian music and thought it better to start a thread here rather than in Naach-Gaana, as this is (mostly) all gaana and no naach.
My latest listening craze is this huge collection of qawwalis by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan called "60 Greatest Sufi and Qawwali Hits From the Master and His Disciple." It's quite a lot of music (qawwalis are long) for a very low price, available on iTunes. It's great stuff to have on the background.

Check out "Rockstar" by Ali Zafar, performed on Coke Studio Pakistan. I had no idea the guy could sing this well. I guess I haven't done much research on him. But this song is both hilarious and catchy. It's reminiscent of the tune of the same name by Nickelback released a few years ago...except a thousand times better. There's great vocal range here, and the backing instruments are killing it.

You might not have known that Ali Zafar was in fact a pop star before he found his way to Bombay films (and consequently has often sung for himself in films). He was huge in Pakistan. This silly one is my favorite:

I can honestly say that I had no idea! Research fail. But that song is good, as well as many others; I've just been really binging on him since discovering Rockstar. He's very talented. And I already liked him as an actor!

Me, I always thought that Naach-Gaana was Naaach OR Gana, not requiring both at once. Hmm, having fixed a typo, I wonder if Indian-English writers will start spelling that word as wonce, or maybe wunce or wuhnce. There is already a won, wone might have the long o, wun and wuhn are possibilities ... Dancelover Just a thread to discuss your desi music listening habits outside of movie soundtracks.
