Hi all, I don't know how I missed out on this lively Bollywood forum for so long! I'm an American (of English, Irish and German descent) and live in the Northeast US and I started watching Hindi films and Indian cinema in general in 2008 when I watched Jodhaa Akhbar on Netflix after it was recommended on a costume drama blog. I quickly watched Dhoom 2 and Mujhse Dosti Karoge and guess who is my favorite actor still today? The more melodramatic and romantic the better for me, so, yeah I love me some K3G. Of course, I love masala films and the grittier realistic genres, too. D-Day is one of my top 10 favorites and I think it's highly underrated. Also enjoyed Gangs of Wasseypur and Kahaani. I've also explored other regional cinemas and enjoyed Urumi, Magadheera, Raavanan (Vikram!), and others. I own over 100 dvds (mostly from 1995-the present) and rewatch often. This weekend I rewatched D-Day, Band Baaja Baarat, Parineeta, I Hate Luv Storys, and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (and, yes, I did leave the house!). Looking forward to participating in lots of fun conversations!

Welcome Filmilibrarian!! 2008 was my intro year as well! My first film was Devdas. As legend/myth/my lousy memory has it (and it's the story I'm sticking with) I had read in Entertainment Weekly a little blurb that it was the first Bollywood movie that had a million dollar budget, which piqued my curiosity. I ended up having to buy it in order to see it. For unknown reasons, even though I loved it, I didn't explore more Bollywood until months later but after that my interest was unbounded.
Hope you enjoy the forum!

Hi Filmilibrarian. Welcome to the forum Jodhaa Akbar was also my first Bollywood movie which I think I saw in 2008 as well. I was zapping tv channels when I came across a segment on South Asian Pacific cinema on CNN. When I landed on the channel, they were talking about Ashutosh Gowariker and Lagaan. I dislike cricket immensely and was about to change the channel when they mentioned the movie he was working on at the time - a historical piece set in the 16th century about a Moghul Emperor and a Hindi Princess. In my family we've always been interested in India and I love historical movies. I figured that even if the movie was rubbish, it would be visually stunning (because of the Moghul architecture and the clothes) and so I bought the dvd. Needless to say I loved the movie and I haven't looked back since. You're the second person to mention how good D-day is. I'll put it on my to watch list. Looking forward to reading your comments and observations
