About 15 years ago, Rajiv Menon, primarily an ad film maker and one of Mani Ratnam's preferred cinematographers, made Kandukondain, the Tamil film that got me interested in Indian films. Although well-reviewed (and at one time, a somewhat frequent "gateway" Indian film due to the Sense and Sensibility connection) it was not a huge moneyspinner due to the costs involved, but it did well enough. Throughout the 00s, Rajiv tried on and off to get various projects off the ground: a riff on Fiddler on the Roof set during Partition, an Abhimaan-like marriage/music drama that he pitched to Aish during the Ravaan shoot and that Abhishek sort of invited himself in on, a biopic of a famous classical singer starring Vidya Balan. Now apparently EROS is trying to produce a thriller he's interested in directing: www.boxofficeindia.co.in/and-now-bollywood/I've seen both the feature length movies Rajiv Menon has made, and neither have even a hint of thriller in their makeup, but both his mentor Mani Ratnam and his protege Gautam V. Menon dabble in the genre from time to time, so perhaps that is where this is coming from.

I've seen both Sapnay (Hindi dubbed version of Minsara Kanavu) and Kandukondain Kandukondain (which was to be remade in Hindi with Sanjay Dutt in Mammooty's role and Salman Khan in Ajith Kumar's role with Aishwarya and Tabu reprising their roles from the original but was later shelved) and enjoyed them greatly - they're a perfect combination of artistic merit and commercial masala. Hopefully he gets a decent star cast to take his film forward.

I really can't imagine Sanjay and Salman in those roles (maybe Anil and Aamir/SRK?), but a Hindi language version would have been nice. Fingers crossed for this one.
