This Kapoor family drama goes down well and is an entertaining watch.
According to the book I'm reading on the Kapoors, this film mirrored their reality pretty closely. Prithviraj Kapoor was always an overbearing presence in Raj's life, and here, too, he appears that way. Raj finds himself sandwiched between old and new. And Randhir's character is dating Babita's character, much to the chagrin of his grandfather, who wanted to get him an arranged marriage. In real life, there was apparently some tension between the Randhir-Babita relatonship and the elder Kapoors.
I mean, their names in the film are even "Kapoor." Maybe it was therapeutic in a way to get it all out on screen.
The most enjoyable part of this film for me was Randhir and Babita's relationship; they have several adorable, beautiful picturized songs and bring some much-needed jollity to the film. The ending is also very satisfactory (I'll let you figure that out for yourself!).
Keep an eye out for filmi music references scattered throughout. "Bol Radha Bol Sangam" can be heard in one scene, and near the beginning, when Ram (Raj) is wallowing in loneliness, the violin melody from Barsaat plays. An ode to Nargis, perhaps?
