Omg! I too found out about this movie just today. Looks very interesting. India doesn't make too much this kind of fantasy movies. At least the CGI is better than in Rudhramadevi. I'm not sure if Vijay is the best choice for the main role but I like that the movie also has Sudeep, Shruti Haasan, and Sridevi! This reminds me a little of Anaganaga O Dheerudu which unfortunately wasn't very good.

I think Vijay has a bit of a thing about period swashbucklers-his vigilante character in Velayudham has at least one sequence where he's wearing kind of faux-medieval clothes and riding around on a horse, plus an Arabian-Nights themed picturization (or segment in picturization), and he also has a knight in armor sequence in one of the Nanban picturizations. Rudhdramadevi and Baahubali both seem to work hard at looking like they were set in an idealized version of historical India (kind of like SRK's Ashoka), while Puli, Anaganaga O Dheerudu (which I couldn't finish, sorry), and Iraadaam Ulagam seem to aim for more of an "anywhere and nowhere" vibe (like Dharam-Veer, only less silly). I would say that Puli's visual style is a lot more convincing than either AOD or IU. I particularly like Sridevi's castle. Just wish they would make up their minds about who has blue eyes and who doesn't

Between Rudramadevi, Mohenjo Daro, Baahubali, Puli, Shuddhi and Bajirao Mastani the period movie lovers will be spoiled I'm exited to see these movies for the drama and the clothes. It's going to be epic!

Yeehaw! All we need is for the Khans/Akki/Ajay/Saif to get on the bandwagon and we'll be golden Memo to the above gentlemen: I'm kidding, wait until we know which of these will be hits.

Maybe I'm biased because I don't like Vijay, but this doesn't look very good. It looks cheap compared to Bahubali. Vijay's hairstyle looks too modern for the setting. Unless he's playing a time traveler from the present.

Oh, it will be schlocky, no doubt, but I'm hoping for a good kind of schlocky rather than a bad kind. I don't think there's any question of it being competition for Baahubali, with its many times bigger budget.

Despite bad reviews, Puli grossed 35 crore its first weekend, and went over 100 in ten days.

Notes: This was Sridevi's first movie in Tamil in 21 years. It is only her first since English Vinglish, three whole years ago. She plays the mother of a grown daughter (Hansika Motwani) in it.
