Full movie can be rented here:
This is an adaptation of It Happened One Night (with Clark Gable and Collette Colbert). Bollywood redid that movie once again in 1991 with Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin starring Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt. Which makes a lot of sense, because upon watching Raj's mannerisms in this, it reminded me of a role that Aamir would really thrive in. Anyway, onto my thoughts of the movie...
Wikipedia also says that CC borrows elements of Roman Holiday which I can definitely see; it definitely had a mid-50s RH rom-com vibe to it. Regardless of whether it's a remake or not, I loved it. It took the general spirit of its original counterpart and added some Indian flair as well as Raj and Nargis' acting.
There's a bit of underlying sorrow here, like a farewell. This was the last full movie Raj and Nargis did together; they ended their affair soon after and Nargis married Sunil Dutt a couple years later. The song "Aaja Sanam" is where they seem to really let their real-life emotions bleed into the film. You can see it in their eyes; it's almost like a goodbye, though the film is not over yet for them. So instead of a pure love song, it's really got this layer of sadness to it that has stuck with me since I first saw the song.
Other than that, things came together well enough to make it a very fast-moving and cohesive film. "All Line Clear" seemed terribly out of place, but it's an earworm with the ability to burrow into your head for a LONG time. The supporting cast did very well. I find that, in the context of my own personal taste, comedy in Hindi films can be over the top and grating; this had none of that. There was slapstick, yes, but there was enough cleverness and guile from Raj's Sagar (he was doing a great job channeling Clark Gable, walking the line between sarcasm & charm; scoundrel & gentleman; yet ultimately good at heart) and there were a lot of laugh out loud moments for me.
Like many actresses of her time in Hollywood, Nargis is elegant and graceful, an earthy kind of gorgeous with an intelligent, animated face. She impresses me more and more with each film I see her in. Her transformation from spoiled, clueless girl to a woman with a broken heart toward the end of the film brings tears to your eyes.
I'd recommend this film to even non-Hindi film aficionados. It was PRECIOUS.

And yay happy ending! Sagar showing up at the very last minute to take Kammo away from her wedding is one of my favorite plot devices in film, especially Hindi films. "Dilwale dulhania le jayenge," indeed.
