I believe I became an Indian Cinema fan around 2005/6. I was exposed to Indian culture from watching crossover films. Bend it like Beckham on DVD (whilst on holiday) and in 2004, I saw Bride and Prejudice at the cinema. I think I followed & backtracked Gurinda's films for a little while before I watched my first Hindi films. Which was Hum Saath Saath Hain followed by Lagaan and then Maine Pyar Kiya.
I like Bollywood films because they're colourful, vibrant, love stories (about love or spiritual love without the visual of sex), the dancing, indian marriage culture, women's fashion and the architecture.
Over the years I watched about 20 or more films including the most popular ones and the less popular ones. There's loads I haven't seen yet though.
I've learnt a few simple words in Hindi and/or Punjabi, thanks to the crossover films and fiction novels written by Indian women with glossary at the back of the book. With indian cinema, it's difficult to understand without english subtitles but with common little words I get the jist of what they're saying.
The last film I watched was Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. Visually in places, dancing and fashion it was wow but the songs could have been better and I didn't care much for the story. Before that the second last film was Aaja Nachle, which I loved. And it's now in my top 5 list.
