It's interesting how Bollywood stars sometimes go on to political careers. I would have thought that someone like Jaya Bachchan wouldn't have much star power left, but the Samajwadi Party (Socialist Party) clearly thinks differently. I wonder if credit really goes to star power or is she a good political organiser? SP pits Jaya Bachchan to counter Modi wave in VaranasiVARANASI: It is likely to be a starry showdown in Varanasi for the 2017 assembly elections, with the Samajwadi Party planning to take the help of cine star-turned-Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan to counter the Modi wave in his constituency Varanasi and neighbouring Chandauli district. The SP high command has communicated with the Varanasi and Chandauli units that Jaya will reach Varanasi on January 19 to take command of party's assembly poll preparations in the two districts. SP's district unit chief Satish Fauji said on Thursday: "The official communication of party has been received. Jaya Bachchan will reach Varanasi to interact with newly constituted district and city committee on January 19. On the next day, she will discuss party's plans with Chandauli unit." "During her stay, Jaya Bachchan will meet selected office-bearers and leaders to review party's electoral performance and also issue guidelines for future preparations in view of 2017 assembly polls," informed Fauji. Why shouldn't Jaya B. be a good political organizer? I find the Bachchans to be the best organized family in Bollywood, (except maybe the Bhatts). All four of them must be part of it! InMyHumble(?)Opinion.

Are you asking me, Dancelover? I agree, I see no reason why she couldn't or shouldn't be a good political organiser. I'm just noting the contradiction in the article, where they state she's valued for her star power, even as it describes her activities as really those of a good political organiser. I wonder why she isn't getting the credit she deserves, maybe just because this is from an entertainment section? Or is there some other reason? I guess you retain your public likeability longer if you're remembered and played-up as a star vs. just a politician.

Stars are idolized, politicians are despised, as a general rule. (Had to post and delete and re-post three times; the quote wasn't showing up. Ugh, technology...)

Isn't Amitabh a supporter of Modi? That's the weird part about Jaya potentially being pitted against Modi.

I don't know much about Amitabh's support of Modi, Desi4life, but he and the family have a long-standing association with SP that pre-dates Modi. So if he did speak out in support of Modi, it might be a case of liking a particular candidate even though you normally would support a different party.

I have the impression that Jaya takes her political work comparatively seriously and is in turn taken comparatively seriously, for a movie star.

Maybe it was Rajeev, the article-writer, who emphasized her star-power. OTOH, reading the article more closely, maybe that star-power was not emphasized so much in it after all. It talks much about her political abilities; hardly anything about her movies that I can find. "... cine-star turned Rajya-Sabha MP ..." (note the Capitals), and after that it is all Politics.
