I suppose it depends on the kind of hotel you are looking for. A few years ago, when a friend and I travelled in Rajasthan, we booked small, really nice hotels and guest-houses via the "homestay" network. Some "homestay" places are a bit like private "bed & breakfast" rooms in Britain, when people rent out rooms in their own houses and provide breakfast and sometimes dinner, too. But mostly we stayed at small, privately owned hotels, some of them modern, others in fantastic old villas. They were a lot cheaper then big international hotel chains, but always clean and friendly. Our first host in Jodhpur recommended other places to stay and even phoned them and booked rooms for us - but at that time, some of the more remote towns still didn't have a reliable internet connection. I think this might be better now, and I found some of the hotels we'd had on this website: www.homestays.in/homestays-in-indiaSo, though I've never booked via this website, I can recommend the "homestay"-network and I think they offer a great range of accommodation - hotels, bungalows, houseboats, jungle lodges, farmhouses - whatever you're looking for.
