Hello! Obviously new here, and obviously my name is Emily, so we've gotten those two things straight! I live in the midwestern United States and hadn't even heard of Bollywood until like five or six years ago...and even then, I didn't really know what it was. I thought they were just weird indie movies or something! Flash forward to about a year and a half ago, when this guy I really like (who unfortunately lives very far away) introduced me to Bollywood because he liked the movies. So he recommended me Veer-Zaara, and I bawled like a baby all the way through because it was one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen. I was especially captivated by the lead actor - what's his name? Samir...? Saif...? Oh, Shahrukh, that's it - and was determined to see the rest of his films, partially because he reminded me a lot, in personality, of the guy that I was into. So I saw Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (loved it) and DDLJ (loved it) and Jab Tak Hai Jaan (loved it, although for some reason I watched half of it and then waited nine months to finish! Haha). My first non-SRK film was Band Baaja Baaraat, and though I initially had to shove down the panic at the idea of my favorite actor absent from the movie, Ranveer Singh made that up to me quite well!! I'm very interested in continuing to branch out and watch more movies over Bollywood history; I've stuck mostly with the '90s and this century. Most recently I watched Om Shanti Om; I loved it, and I've had freakin' Dard-E-Disco stuck in my head all day! My favorite aspect of Bollywood is definitely the music - I love looking up the playback singers and listening to their stuff, the guys especially. Sonu Nigam and Kumar Sanu - and, of course, Udit! - are probably my favorites, though they all are so excellent! I guess I really love Bollywood because the romances make me feel like no other movies do - they fill me with such hope and light and happiness, and, in this crazy world, I really need that from time to time! I'm not a big fan of the action movies...I watched Race a few days ago, because I love horse racing, and it was pretty "meh" to me. Then again, I'm not a fan of action movies in any of the industries, so that's that! Anyway, long rant over, looking forward to meeting and discussing films with you all. Cheers!

yay, welcome aboard! If you like upbeat love stories and are interested in branching out beyond Shahrukh, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Dil Bole Hadippa, Gori Teri Pyaar Mein, Vivaah and Hum Aapke Hain Koun are perhaps worth a look, along with the Tamil movie I Have Found It.

Welcome, Emily! I'm glad that you joined us!
I'm sure you noticed that the Lead Actress of Band Baaja Baraat, Anushka Sharma, was also the Leading Lady in RabNBDJodi (her debut; she and Dehpika Padukone in OSOm were *so* lucky to begin opposite SRK!), and was also Second Lead in JTHJ. (Notice how very often we use initials BBB was such a hit, that Anushka and Ranveer were quickly signed for another movie, Ladies versus Ricky Bahl.
Me, I am a life-long Philadelphian (2/3 of a century, almost). I started watching BW dance videos in 2007, and began to study the industry in 2009. My favorite parts are the dances, which is why I sign myself ...

To help fans check who their favorite actor/actress has been paired with (called a "jodi"), and how many movies they made with each, I have been making Index Lists of Lead Actors, with 50 actors and 70 actresses so far. Three Lists, each with two pages, so far, organized first by Importance, then by Date of Birth, and then by Date Film released.
Shah Rukh Khan is the fourth person (behind three older actors) here: bollywhat.boards.net/thread/435/jodis-1960s-stars-3khans-juhi
Anushka Sharma is the third person on page 2 here: bollywhat.boards.net/thread/393/jodis-star-who-matched?page=2
This is still a Work In Progress. I am very proud of it.

Welcome to the forum Emily! I love hearing how people go from not even knowing what Bollywood is to being fans who can list off their favorite stars and playback singers. Band Baja Baarat and DDLJ are two of my favorites, and Shah Rukh was my gateway drug too! Look forward to discussing all things Bolly with you, and head over to the recommendations thread when you feel the need to expand your horizons (6 years in and I'm still expanding mine ; )
