I don't know what the audience for a Malayalam film is on this new board but if you guys can get your hands on it, I want to recommend the most feel good film I've seen in a long time. The writing and Nazriya's lead performance are both incredibly charismatic. I saw it in theatres in February and I still feel all warm and fuzzy inside when I see these songs.
Oh hey, my favourite film of the year! I saw it in theatres in February and I still gush about it every chance I get. And this is despite having seen the other two feel-good(ish) blockbusters of the year How Old Are You? & Bangalore Days. So I'm curious, Dariya, why did you think it was Bollywood style?
I guess my impression of Malayalam cinema is that it's generally more artistic and experimental than Bollywood, covering a wide range of themes taken from everyday life and (in the past at least) sort of looking down on the romance genre (?). This obviously was more the classic romance, complete with a wide eyed heroine, hunky hero, unrequited love, songs and of course
Dariya had characterized this in the "recently viewed" thread as: "Very cute, and relatable for those who've had unattainable crushes. More Bollywood style, but also more grounded than typical Bollywood."
That's pretty close to how I feel about it. Interreligious romance is not something that really revs my engines, although I thought they did a decent job of implying that the heroine's culture and beliefs were not completely subordinated to her husband's in the end (she's wearing a mangalsutra, but they give their child a Christian name in honor of her cousin/her husband's ex-girlfriend, Julie). The other main problem I had was male lead Nivin Pauly, who looked like Tusshar Kapoor and gave only slightly better of a performance than Tusshar would have. He was literally the least charismatic male of any age in the film. Fortunately, he was just kind of this passive object of the heroine's love who doesn't take up too much screen space.
But it's very witty and well-made, with an absolutely brilliant performance by Nazriya Nazim as she ages from a high school student to a medical intern in her twenties, a very pretty soundtrack and some very pretty women's clothes. Also the Mallu preference for shooting anywhere and everywhere in the real world rather than a soundstage pays off as usual: I wanted to *live* in the heroine's village (preferably in her parents' gorgeous home with a Universal Translator embedded in my ear, of course).
I would be very curious to see where the director goes from here, since this was his debut film.
