They're a huge part of what makes filmi films so special! Let's show them some love I'll name a few of my favorite to start. New singers: Arijit Singh. This mans voice is just so amazingly emotional. The first song of his I heard was "Phir Le Aaya Dil" and on first listen I dissolved into a salty puddle of tears. His performance just hit me so hard. And luckily, since then boy has been BUSY. Mohit Chauhan. I LOVE his tone. It's so pure an distinctive. "Tum Si He" and "Saans" are some of my favorites from him. Shreya Ghoshal. This sums up why she's the most popular singer in India today. Older singers: Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan. Of course I HAVE to mention these two, they ruled the 90s and for good reason! I pretty much owe my bollywood fandom to them, as they're songs caught my ear before anything else! They compliment each other so well, Alka's sharpness to Udit's warmth. "Laal Dupatta" is still such a happy place song for me.

Current singers: I like what I've heard of Arjit Singh as well, though my favorite male playback artist right now is probably Mika Singh. He's not a "goes with every face" kind of singer, but I really like the raucous quality of his voice. Female artists, currently charmed by Sunidhi Chauhan and Chinmayi Sripaada.
Slightly less current: Yes to Alka and Udit, and I might add Kumar Sanu and S.P.Balasubramanium. Also, I think it's cool that Bappi Lahiri is making something of a comeback-I just enjoy listening to him.
Going further back, I like pretty much all the major male vocalists that I've encountered from the 60s/70s era-Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, and Munna Dey especially. I prefer Asha Bhosle to Lata, and have a soft spot for Sulakshana Pandit-it was probably a mistake for her to pursue a career in front of the cameras as well as a singing career, but she had a very pretty, delicate singing voice that didn't just sound like a clone of everyone else.

Favorite...all of them?! Just kidding. Male: This is way harder than the female category; for some reason, I tend to like male voices better than female, so it always proves a problem to choose my favorite in every genre! I love Udit Nayaran (Main Yahaan Hoon!! 'nuff said), Sonu Nigam (I love how light and effortless his voice is), and Kumar Sanu (Teri Ummed Tera Intezar & Tujhe Dekha To being two of my favorite BW songs) the best, I think. Sukhwinder Singh is great. I love the quality of Salim's voice and what it adds to songs. Female: I'm going to second odadune and say that I prefer Asha to Lata...I absolutely love her duet with Abhijeet in "Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main" from DDLJ (ooh I love Abhijeet TOO!) I think my favorite girl singer is Harshdeep Kaur; "Heer" is so pretty. Shreya Goshal is great as well.

Thought I'd revisit this as when I first posted, I had seen maybe 7 or 8 Hindi films and now I'm approaching 100, lol.
Current singers: Sonu Nigam is my favorite ever...can't get enough of his voice. Other modern favorites include Shreya Goshal, Ali Zafar, Sunidhi Chauhan, Mohit Chauhan, and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.
Less current: I dig Kumar Sanu & Udit Narayan, as everyone does. I'm not a massive Alka Yagnik fan (though I do like her); I prefer Kavita Krishnamurthy.
Even less current: Mukesh & Mohammed Rafi my favorites for the men (with Manna Dey perhaps in third), I still prefer Asha to Lata (though Awara-era Lata is sublime), and I also like Geeta Dutt. Honorable mention to Talat Mehmood for his wonderful work in Devdas (1955).

Great question...Kanika Kapoor is so unique, Sunidhi Chauhan will always be the voice I associate with my early Bollywood obsession, especially "Beedi" which I will play on repeat sometimes, Benny Dayal, Vishal Dadlani, Ali Zafar (Madhubala from MBKD is my favorite), Sonu Nigham, and, of course Sukhwinder Singh. And I'm not sure I like the trend of Bollywood actors and actresses doing their own playback singing. It works occasionally as a novelty or when it makes sense in the film (i.e. Farhan Akhtar in Rock On!!).
