It's getting pretty bad reviews. The highest rating I have seen it get is a 3/5.
Ratings:1.5/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN A handful of scenes are nicely shot, like one in a lake, where a local politician's rapist son finds himself surrounded by a few of Rajjo's revenge-seeking gang members who emerge dramatically from under the water. But such portions are few and far between in this dull film. And if you must watch this film, watch it for Juhi Chawla's inspired performance; it's the only bright spot in Gulaab Gang. I'm going with one-and-a-half out of five. Muddled and forgettable.
Ratings:2/5 Review By: Anupama Chopra Site:Star World (Hindustan Times) The result is an ineffectual and messy ode to women empowerment in which women, with nicely styled hair, maim, kill, fight elections and in between find the time to sing and dance. For a real dose of women empowerment, watch Gulabi Gang, a terrific documentary on Sampat Pal, which is still running in select theaters. For Gulaab Gang, I’m going with two stars.
Ratings:-- Review By: Komal Nahata Site:Zee ETC Bollywood Business Another point which will definitely go against the film is that except for the highly evolved audience, the other viewers will not appreciate the beating up of men by ladies – this, because of the male-dominated society Indians live in. For the same reason, lack of a hero in the drama will tell on the box-office performance of the film, that too in a very pronounced manner. On the whole, Gulaab Gang is too dull, dry and boring to entertain. It will be anything but in the pink of health at the ticket windows. It will flop miserably at the box-office.
Rating:/ Review By:Sneha May Francis Site:Emirates 24/7 Although the character could have appeared jaded, Juhi plays it with impeccable restraint and concentrates on her wavering temperament with incredible flair, making this her most significant performance to date. The supporting cast of fairly unknown names are impressive, especially Rajjo’s two loyal soldiers. Even though ‘Gulaab Gang’ has so much going for it, it fails to win our applause.
Rating:3/5 Review By:Mohar Basu Site:Koimoi Gulaab Gang is not unforgettable but not unwatchable either. With many euphoric moments of utter jubiliation, the film’s stronghold is Madhuri and Juhi with individually mettlesome performances and the friskily excitable chemistry together. Though the film fails to use its scope rightly and delivers an extremely creased up affair. Far from perfect but engrossing nevertheless.
Rating:1/5 Review By:Shubhra Gupta Site:Indian Express ‘Gulab Gang’ is actually the old-style good vs evil story, styled in the tired way these films have been for the longest time. Madhuri Dixit’s ‘Gulaab Gang’ has nothing to do with Sampat Pal’s real-life ‘Gulaabi Gang’, even if both wear pink saris, and fight for women’s rights in a rural North Indian outpost. The difference between the two films ( and ‘Gulaabi Gang’ did the smart thing by releasing just ahead of the Bollywood take) is stark : the first , featuring the plain-faced Sampat, is a hard-hitting documentary ; Madhuri Dixi’s gang, on the other hand, is as make-believe as make-believe can get. ‘Gulaab Gang’ is faking it.
Rating:3/5 Review By:Gayatri Sankar Site:Zee News Overall, ‘Gulaab Gang’ may not be a typical film meant to taste success at the Box Office. The film does speak about issues that need urgent attention, but may not be enough to draw people to the theatres. But Juhi Chawla’s performance in the film isn’t worth a miss. So watch it for her.

The question is, does the audience opinion match with the critics?

Actually there are quite a few 3,5 and even4 4 stars reviews, but from what I understand this really is "typical" masala film that one either loves or hates. Juhi is getting most praise for her evil act, Madhuri is either praised alongside her, or they complain about her styling and dancing as an interference in the film. I too wanted her to be deglam, then again this is a pure mainstream so I don´t know why would anyone be shocked that she is made to look gorgeous.... The response on Twitter seems generally positive, but one cannot really make any general claim from just that....
In any case it is disappointing for me as a Madhuri fan and I just want the film to be over and done with. After the treat that was Dedh Ishqiya Gulaab Gang appears to be a let down and not my kind of film at all.

The Big Theater Far Away was confused about whether it was playing this or the documentary about Sampat Pal; I couldn't justify making the trip over there w/o knowing.

The Big Theater Far Away was confused about whether it was playing this or the documentary about Sampat Pal; I couldn't justify making the trip over there w/o knowing. The theater here had the same mistake at first, displaying information for the documentary rather than the Dixit/Chawla movie, but it had been corrected on the website by late last night. For what it's worth, this was a Rave Cinema. I think Gulaab Gang is very much like a 70s Amitabh Bachchan movie. If you hate those, I'd imagine you'd probably hate this movie, too. (I enjoyed it.) Madhuri reminded me very much of Big B in those films: serious, a woman of few words, soft-spoken but carries a big stick (or aruval!). She always tries to resolve problems peacefully at first, but she doesn't hesitate to use force if the peaceful approach doesn't work. The fight scenes were very like those 70s movies, too. Madhuri and her comrades have very physical, hand-to-hand combat with men. And the women get hit, too. It isn't a man-hating movie, though. Most of the conflicts are about corruption and not about male/female issues. (There are some male/female issues, but it's primarily about corruption.) The best part is having both the hero and the villain be strong characters who just happen to be women. Juhi is awesome as the corrupt politician. That र that Madhuri wears as a bindi, by the way, makes sense because her whole focus is on educating girls and teaching them to read.

I thought the fight sequences were very good... as they should be. (Anything else would have been patronizing)I thought it was a bit low budget. Some of the shots in offices had a distinctly studio feel to them. The songs were nearly all pink and dance-y. I would have liked a bit more variety in them. I don't have a problem with their inclusion given the masala nature of the film. I think that here - thankfully - women's issues weren't trivialized and the result still manages to entertain. (which is its purpose.)

Yeah, the trade analists generally agree that this as well as confusion if the film even released made a big dent in the opening at BO. Film picked up on the weekend but will have to sustain decent numbers now to be safe. I am not sure what will happen. On one hand I would really like Madhri to have a hit, on the other hand Dedh ishqiya was incomparably better movie and yet still flopped so.... I con´t know.

Box Office India says Gulaab Gang earned 8.25 crore for the weekend, one crore less than Queen earned. Note that BOI waited long before calling Dedh Ishqiya a "Flop" instead of "Below Average." By contrast, they are already pronouncing Queen "Average." boxofficeindia.com Note also that their lowest grouping is "Disaster" so "Flop" is one level above that. And also, they seem to misunderstand the word "average" IMO they would do better to call that category "broke even." Dancelover Yeah, the trade analysts generally agree that this as well as confusion if the film even released made a big dent in the opening at BO. The film has given two older actresses an opportunity to do something different - as a vehicle it has its weaknesses. But Juhi playing an Indian version of Cuella De Ville and Madhuri doing the wire work was really wonderful to see. I personally didn't care that the issue of the school was shafted. Does one care about issues in masala films?? I wanted to see the bad guys punished and they were. I think the style of the film was uneven so many reviewers were confused. I think the director went for a more 'real' kind of masala (light on comedy) because he didn't want to trivialise. Cinematic rape is a very sensitive issue these days but cannot be avoided in a film about justice and women... so stylistically there was a bit of juggling to do. Yes it was an entertainer but it had to maintain a serious tone where some of the issues were concerned.

I saw this movie recently, and I actually liked it. The acting from Madhuri and Juhi was good, and the other supporting actresses (Tannishtha Chatterjee, Divya Jagdale, and Priyanka Bose) gave good performances too. The movie did have some issues of course. I thought the script was sort of all over the place, and I think the singing and dancing should have been reduced. But overall, I think it's worth a watch.
