On a dreary old Saturday afternoon today I watched Bhoothnath and enjoyed it - a sweet movie and the friendship between Bhoothnath (Amitabh B) and Banku was fabulous. Almost needed tissues at the very end but it came good And this evening instead of watching election results I watched Aashiqui 2 and enjoyed (or rather appreciated) that as well. A couple of days ago I watched Ram-Leela and, again, appreciated that movie

Angaaray (1998), unsubbed: I'd been curious about this Mahesh Bhatt directed crime melodrama for some time, but only recently discovered that Shemaroo had it up on youtube as a series of ten-minute segments. It's basically a better-executed than average take on the kind of thing Akshay Kumar was doing in the late nineties-in this case he's an undercover cop running with his childhood buddies (Nagarjuna, Paresh Rawal, and some guy who gets killed), who have grown up to be petty thugs, and he's trying both to get at the evil pandit/crime lord (Gulshan Grover, in a gray wig and neckbrace) who employs his buddies and turn his buddies back towards the light side. Mahesh Bhatt's a more visually interesting director than most of the guys who handle these things, elevating the very artificial looking sets to something rather cool and comic-booky, and except for the obligatory shouty bits, gets pretty good performances out of his actors. There's only a couple of major action setpieces, apparently shot before Akshay's back injury on another film, and although they're decent enough as these things go they just point up the fact that this is otherwise a fairly talky movie full of people (including the hero) who do pretty morally dubious things and are therefore kind of hard to root for. Also, the obligatory, somewhat risque song where Akki and his leading lady take liberties with each other's persons becomes more disturbing when you remember that the lady in question is Pooja Bhatt, the director's daughter. Might be worth a look if you like the cast (in addition to the people mentioned above, Sonali Bendre has a small role as Nag's love interest) but hardly essential, unless you really, really need to see a large, hyperactive Punjabi man glomp-hug a Telugu man and a Gujarati man at every conceivable opportunity.
The "good parts version" of Angaaray: -Collection of Akki action scenes, plus one of his better acting moments, when he realizes that the goonda (Nag) threatening him is his childhood friend: -The best known song from the movie, Aande Aande, which is largely centered on the bromances, with a visit from Sonali:
-My favorite picturization, Hai Koi Meherbaan, which is a sort of item number with Pooja and Akki (not entirely G-rated, although it's not the risque one I mentioned above):

I have watched Muqaddar Ka Sikandar. LIked it a lot, even though I always get mad when the Devdas-ish kind of a plot doesn´t end well for the people I actually root for.

Finally finished Irandam Ulagam. Basically a mashup of the surreal, the mystical and the kitschy, wrapped around two stalkertastic romances, one of them set in a fantasy world involving an uncomfortably glib and PG-rated portrayal of a rape culture. (although the filmmaker did seem to be trying to make a point with it). Not sure I can recommend it to other people but I think it does come off as an interesting failure rather than a straightforwardly bad movie. Will try to say more in the Beyond Bollywood thread at some point.

Hasee Toh Phasee (2014) Keeping in mind it's a romcom where you kinda have to buy into the plot (particularly Parineeti's character) I absolutely enjoyed and loved this one. I didn't think much of Siddharth after seeing his debut (which was so bleagh I seem to have erased the title from my memory) but I don't see how anyone could not fall for him after watching this. Parineeti is great as usual*, but I feel she did falter a bit in some dramatic scenes. A special mention for the actor who played Siddharth's friend - he was perfect! Really really loved all the songs. I feel like they added rather than detracted from the plot which is always nice. I both shed genuine tears and laughed my butt off just in the last five minutes. Highly recommended!
*P.S. We'll just ignore that horrid Chinese

Peepli Live
Shirin Farhad ki toh nikal padi - cute concept, being an "older" single person myself I was looking forward to the story. The movie kind of fell apart the 2nd half which was disappointing. The settings were so charming - Farhad's apartment; Shirin's house, the whole Parsee neighborhood of Mumbai all so cute, quaint and charming.
Phata Poster Niklha Hero - really liked this fun, light movie with Shahid Kapoor. I am bit proud of my ever increasing filmi knowledge. Early on I was often reminded of Andaz Apna Apna (as well as some of Mahmohan Desai 70s capers) and subsequently found out that it was written and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi - who was responsible for Andaz Apna Apna!

Bhavani, 2011. A Tamil movie on Eros Now with English subtitles! Sneha as a cop kicking ass and taking names! Okay, it's not actually that good, but I enjoyed it for what it was. It's so nice to see a female hero movie that doesn't make a big deal about being a "woman-oriented" film as if it's some crazy idea nobody's thought of before.
I rewatched a couple of other movies this week, trying to give them a second chance, mostly because I had languishing blog reviews for them sitting in my drafts folder.
Anjaana Anjaani, 2010. I liked it better the second go-round, once I knew what I was getting into. Ranbir and Priyanka are great, but the script still kind of gives me whiplash, the way they try to build a standard-issue romance narrative around suicide attempts.
Ishaqzaade, 2012. Boo. Hiss. Still don't like it. I don't care if "that's how it really is", I don't want to watch that much misogyny. But Parineeti! She's just fantastic. Only reason I made it through this movie again.

Lootera This dvd has been sitting here staring at me since November(!!). Why oh why did I wait so long to watch it?? It was a great movie, Sonakshi and Ranveer were an unexpected delight - and utterly believable - as a jodi, Sona impresses me more each time I see her, and I'm hoping we see more of Subdued Ranveer, because he's really quite a sweetheart when he's in that mode. Oh, and a brief but entrancing appearance from the lovely Divya Dutta. The story moves along at a glacial pace, but it didn't feel like it was plodding at all. Ok, maybe once or twice it did linger a bit longer than it should have, but really, it was only once or twice. A perfect movie to curl up with on a sofa on a Sunday afternoon.

Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) : was it usefull to make a feminine remake of the great Ram Aur Shyam (1967) ? I wonder... Sorry, but Dilip Kumar in Ram Aur Shyam was so incredible that he immortalized this story of separated twins. Hema Malini was not bad, but obviously suffers from the comparison. 12/20
