Since, sadly enough, this seems to be a perennial topic, I thought it might be wise to have a thread dedicated to it. I think this lucid and graceful piece of writing by Nilanjana Roy might serve as a good jumping-off point for discussion: The Crisis in our CommunityI think it's worthwhile to note that Roy points out that Indian boys are just as vulnerable as Indian girls when it comes to physical and sexual abuse (although this seems counter-intuitive at first, this claim seems plausible to me - while boys in India are more valued than girls in many ways, they're also less likely to be cloistered and protected, and I don't think there's broad awareness in India that the friendly neighborhood uncle might be someone you need to watch out for).

That's probably one of the best pieces I've seen on the subject so far, Amba, thanks for sharing it. Sadly, I think the author is probably right that this is a problem that will only become less acute with time, none of the short-term fixes are likely to have any effect. The outrage and coverage are actually signs India is heading in the right direction, in my opinion, and I hope that trend continues.
