Has anyone purchased any VCDs of Bollywood movies? I see that they're around 100 rupees cheaper than the DVDs and wanted to know what the picture/audio quality was like on some of these titles.

I have only ever tried one VCD...it was Aag that I got free with a DVD I bought. The film's from 1948, so the quality was pretty bad. I'm not sure how VCDs of modern movies compare.

I haven't bought any vcds recently; the ones I have are mostly of 60-80s movies, and the quality is usually about on par with a used but still watchable VHS tape, I guess. If you don't feel like you need subtitles, it's a good way to cheaply investigate a film you're curious about but feeling iffy on, and for some obscure films from the 90s and earlier, it's the only game in town.
Typically the movie is spread across two vcds, breaking at or close to the intermission point. When I was watching them regularly, I found them a nice way to work my way through a long Indian film across a couple of weeknights-just put on a disc a night. There was just something about snuggling down in bed with exactly half a desi film to watch, that I enjoyed.

Well, the quality of the images is not as good as a VHS tape. It is 1150 kbit/sec MPEG-1, and you don't have subs. I add that the format is small (about 320x240), so you'll have large black stripes on your screen, and the audio file is poor (MPEG-1 Layer2) With these two elements, the best is to watch them on a little screen, or your computer. Open the largest file (>700 Megaoctets) with vlc using CTRL+SHIFT+O , you'll have this small image on your screen. If you switch it to full screen: it is watchable.

From the user point of view, VCD is very like VHS: the image quality is similar to VHS; there are no subtitles, unless they were recorded as part of the picture image; there are no interactive features; and navigation is very limited. I've also seen DVD players that were unable to play VCDs. The quality is so low that the only reason I'd consider a VCD is if that's the only format available.

From Amazon:
-Bhagam Bhag -De Dana Dan -Mujhse Shaadi Karoge -Awara Pagal Deewana
If I survive all of these, and knock off Garam Masala on youtube, I will probably have seen all I need to of Akki's 00s comedies.

Couldn't help myself...found the YRF DVD of Mera Naam Joker on Amazon and had to snatch it up. This version has 40 minutes more footage than my heavily edited Shemaroo DVD, so I really can't wait to rewatch.

Ramayana Divine Loophole looks great: my order has gone in. The style is reminiscent of Sita Sings The Blues, which I recommend to anyone who has not seen it.

The author says in a Q&A on Amazon that he was inspired to read the Ramayana because of her movie and books she recommended on her website.

Turns out the Amazon description was wrong, as I received the Shemaroo version I already own.
