Today's Hindi movie binge from myindiashopping. I've been wanting to see some Raj Kapoor movies, so bought two that the site said definitely have subtitles.

Aag .... Auuuuuughhh! I hope you get a chance to watch Shree 420 some time, if you haven't, and want to see the best of Raj Kapoor. Awaara is all right too. I've been deeply frustrated with all the other films of his that I've watched.

Both Shree 420 and Awaara are on myindiashopping, but subtitles are listed as "unknown"...I don't wanna take the chance that they're not there. I'll see them eventually.

Emily, Can you tell me more about myindiashopping? Do you live in the US? How long does it take to get the DVD's? How bad are shipping costs?

Hey -
Yes, I live in the Midwest.
Shipping costs are naturally pretty steep...these eight movies ran up to $50! Also, it's a long process. I ordered two movies sometime in early January and didn't receive them until towards the end of February. Otherwise, I haven't had any problems. It's nice to have something to look forward to.

You can compare against other sites' listings even if you don't plan to buy from them. For example, Induna seems pretty accurate about which has subs and which don't. Also, these days, MOST legitimate Hindi DVDs do have subtitles (not so for DVDs of movies from the South, unfortunately). So if it's Shemaroo, Eros, Ultra, Eagle, they almost certainly have subtitles, and even the cheaper labels like Moser Baer and Priya are putting subtitles on MOST films these days. But you can always cross-reference against Induna and see if they list the same edition with subs.

^ That is great advice Carla, thank you. I'm still quite a novice at this, so anything is very helpful at this point!

I usually look for subtitles at Podnapisi. Very frustrating when the subtitles are at a different frame-rate to the video though. Much fiddling required in subtitle editing software...

Someone mentioned Induna.com as a source of DVDs. I have just placed my first order with them - the 1951 version of Devdas and The Householder, the first of the Merchant/Ivory films.
Hope they don't take long to arrive.

From India to France, it took 1 to 2 weeks, and I paid extra fees at the arrival (1 quarter of the sum). @ shantysal: change framerate (FPS) easily with Subtitle Edit or Subtitle Workshop --> forum.videohelp.com/threads/292568-Change-FPS-of-subtitleIt is very simple!

Mine have been shipped from Induna and should take a few days by DHL (had a notification this morning) - so fingers crossed. I have tried changing the framerate using Subtitle Workshop and it made no difference - unless I am doing something wrong! Is there a trick to it?

Sorry, I meant: "It is easy to modify FPS", I forgot to mention that afterwards it depends on how you read your DVD. If you read it on your PC with BSplayer, for instance, you have to right-click on the picture, then choose "Subtiles" --> "Load Subtitle" I think I remember that reading it with VLC, the subtitle file must have exactly the same name as the movie (except for the extensions .vob and .srt) Now, if you want to read it on your standalone player, you'll have to completely rebuild a DVD. It's a long process: Rip the DVD, extract or demux files, convert files, remux files, burn the new DVD... You'll need a lot of tools and time to do that. I believe the best site to have informations and free tools is: www.videohelp.com/guides
