Director S.S. Rajamouli already had a reputation for making unconventional films that turned out to be hits (Vikramarkudu, Yamadonga, Magadheera), but in 2012, he cemented his status as the craziest director in Andhra Pradesh by making a big budget special effects extravaganza with a relatively obscure cast, about a funny-annoying young loafer (Nani) who falls for a girl (Samantha) who is being pursued by a super-sleazy evil rich guy (Sudeep). Loafer gets killed and reincarnated as a housefly and sets out to harrass the baddie, in order to defend the girl and to avenge his own murder. It was a super hit, and we had a thread for it on the old forums. www.bollywhat-forum.com/index.php?topic=34299.0
The Malayalam dubbed version seems to be available legitimately on youtube, but without subs:
I personally had a lot of the same issues with it that I had with Magadheera: a fairly boring first half that exists to offer some kind of explanation and emotional resonance for the weird, wild, over-the-top second half, and villains who are so unpleasant that they stop being fun to watch. I also found the lead pair kind of bland. But most people liked it. We had an interesting discussion on why the hero reincarnated as a fly.

I enjoyed Eega for the sheer inventiveness of the idea. Plus, I liked watching the fly dancing...

It's streaming on Netflix as Makkhi (Hindi dub). We've pretty much loved S.S. Rakamouli since Magadheera, so this quirky tale with the fly as hero was right up our alley.

At this point we get some interesting links about the film's success and its making (again, I'm trimming some back and forth about people not being sure whether their theater would get this or Billa II, and I've been having trouble with the Times of India website this evening, so I'm not fixing a link in one of Prem Rogue's posts that goes to there):
