Even though India did not choose to submit RRR in the best Foreign Language category (Indian Film Board's decision making process probably deserves its own thread!) The distributors in the US have convinced Rajamouli to submit the film in all other categories it qualifies for. From my understanding that is Best Picture, Best Director, Best Song, Best Score, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best VFX and even submitting for both Ram Charan and Jr NTR in best actors category.
From what I can tell in the press and on film twitter, many of the people pushing for RRR to earn Nominations are academy voters and even some Directors and editors etc... that have earned noms and even won Oscars themselves.
Variance Films and Potentate Films (Former BollyWhat forum member Hatefuljosh) are behind the Oscar push. They got Rajamouli on a panel discussion last month at TIFF, Had a special screening of RRR with a Q and A in NYC and now have Rajamouli in LA for a special Tollywood to Hollywood showing of his films at Beyond Fest. Last night RRR sold out the Chinese Mann Cinema with Rajamouli in attendance. Today there is a marathon showing of Eega, and both Bahubalis with a Q and A at another theater and later this week Yamadonga and Maryada Ramana get showings with a Q and A.
I assume Rajamouli is making the rounds in LA. He recently signed with Hollywood Agents CAA.
I don't know anything at all about the inner workings of the nominations and voting process. My understanding is they need to get it onto the academy streaming service that members use to see films before they vote. And of course money needs to be spent on advertizing and PR.
Personally I am hoping for a couple of Nominations for the awards that get televised. That would be such a huge win and open the doors for more people to become curious about Indian movies. I have been making recomendations like mad on Twitter to all the newbies. Lots of people are jumping in feet first, and not just with Rajamouli's films.
Oscar Noms are announced January 24th 2023
Not sure if there is any Golden Globe buzz but those nominations are out December 13th.
Additionally RRR has been nominated for 3 Saturn Awards (Science Fiction awards)
Best Action Adventure
Best Film Direction
Best International Film
The Saturn Awards are given out October 25th
I'll add some press links to this thread a little later...
