This film is long awaited, I think there is a thread here about it that still had Mahesh Babu listed as starring in it before production started. Its a Tamil film based on the much loved Books by Kalki. Here is the trailer
I had read about 100 pages of the book to help me with the setting and to know the main characters as I had heard the story was rather complex. (I think just peaking at the cast list on the wiki page for the film will help too but is not necessary)
I expected an epic, palace intrigue, swashbuckler and was not disappointed.
The movie stars Vikram as the Chola Crown Prince, Karthi as his friend, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the wife of the chief Minister, Trisha as the Crown Prince's sister and Jayan Ravi as Ponniyin Selvan the Crown Prince's Brother. Praksh Raj, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prabhu, Sarathkumar among many others also have roles
I Loved this film and now can't wait to finish the books. Part 2 is done filming and slated to release in June so I am glad there won't be a long wait.
I saw it FDFS and as usual was the only non Desi in the theater. It was so fun to chat with a few of the audience afterwards to see how they thought Mani Ratnam did with such a beloved book. They were absolutely giddy. It was moving to hear them talk about how long they waited for a film to be made and how some of them wished their Grandparents were around to see it. Really drove home to me how important the books are and the history its based on to Tamil people.
AR Rahman did the music. It was good but the visuals and intriguing story really made it so I hardly noticed the music.
Aishwarya was stunning. So beautiful. Trisha was good too. I am less familiar with Aishwarya Lekshmi but she got some whistles when she showed up, so I will have to check her movies out too. The female characters are all important to the story so it will be fun to see how the second part plays out.
Karthi has the biggest part in this and is absolutely perfect. I am guessing Jaya Ravi will have a bigger part in the second half. Anyway, I can't wait to see it again and am glad the second half will be out in less than a year. Go see it!
