Hello, what is funny in this strip, in your honest opinion? I had never seen "to think it up" before, so I looked at my dictionary and found 'to conceive, to imagine, to invent"... that could tally. But this is not funny by itself. So maybe it's the way Patty speaks of Graham Bell: "The guy", as if he was just an ordinary man.

The point, IMNSHO, is that the schoolkid reporting is so sure in her own mind of what she is trying to say, that she fails to make herself clear, and yet she does not accept the teacher's corrections. Arrogant kid! Yes, "to think up" uses plain English one-syllable words instead of multi-syllable words derived from foreign languages. This shows her place in the American "class system" as an "ordinary person," common, even vulgar, who rejects "high-falutin'" words. This is more "social commentary" than "humor." I seem to recall that French also has ways of expressing this concept. But as for "just an ordinary man," we Americans proclaim "all men were created equal," and many of us invent things. Howard "Dancelover" Wilkins, whose place in America's class system is "pointy-headed liberal." Hello, what is funny in this strip, in your honest opinion? Hello, what is funny in this strip, in your honest opinion? The humor I get from the strip is Patty goes through a long series of corrections with the teacher and then goes back to saying her vague opening statement instead of incorporating the corrections. IMO it's like the comedy routine where person A is about to do something dangerous but is stopped by person B who warns them and explains the dangers, then person A does the dangerous thing anyways and suffers the stated consequences.
