Lovely write-up, odadune. Why did I always think you were on/from the West Coast? *nods* Like Nag and Nagaina in Rikki Tikki Tavi.

(The original He-Man, Transformers, Ducktales, and My Little Pony were "my" childhood, which gives you some idea of my age). We must be similar in age! I loved He-Man and She-Ra as a kid. The others I didn't watch, but I remember seeing commercials for them and being aware of them. My apathy for My Little Pony did not keep my daughter from falling in love with the reboot, however. Bride and Prejudice bored me when I saw it. I saw Bride and Prejudice on video sometime not too long after it came out, and actually thought it was cute. But it didn't send me running to check out Bollywood movies, which I now think speaks volumes (or at least enough) about it. I don't count it among my Bollywood experiences, really. Thanks for all the awesome info and insights you share!

odadune, I enjoyed read this! Some of the things you mentioned rang true for me as well. My dad was in the military and I got to live in Japan as a kid and in Germany as a teenager. I think being exposed to different cultures; TV, movies and radio that were not in English, influenced me to be more open to cinema that is in a different language. Living in a different countries also helped me realized the world is much bigger than America, and sometimes Americans can be isolationistic or North American centric. I struggle with how my kids' world view is going to be different than mine. They have lived in the same small Southern town their whole life, never moved, never had to go outside their own culture (Other than the Bollywood movies, anime or other movies I force them to watch!) I never liked My Little Ponies much (my girls do), I liked Scooby Doo and Nancy Drew better.

Hey, glad you liked! Japan to Germany...wow, that must have been quite a contrast. I've only been to German very briefly, I think just a short trip to the Black Forest region in my teens, and never to Japan. I think it's cool that you try to expand the kids' horizons by exposing them to Bollywood, anime* etc. I read a fair amount of Nancy Drew growing up, although I didn't get any of the tv versions, and I watched an unealthy amount of Scooby Doo. (Dad once threatened to ban us kids from watching the show if we kept talking like Shaggy...) *I watched some of that growing up too, notably something with Captain Harlock that I never caught the title of (might have been Arcadia of My Youth) when I was overseas, and Irresponsible Capt. Tylor when I was in college or thereabouts.
