Hi everybody, newbie here! I’m really glad to be part of this great forum. I’ve been a lurker on the old version for a few months now and I found it very educative.
Well, I guess I’ll just start introducing myself. I’m a 21 year old French girl who fell in love with India and its cinema back when I was still in middle school and chanced upon Lagaan, K3G and Devdas on TV (of the three, only the latter didn't remain one of my favorites). I already knew of Bollywood since, being of West African descent, I was exposed at a fairly young age to Indian cinema and particularly to Big B’s films (my father was a big fan of his).
In fact, not many people are aware of the fact that B-wood movies were very popular in West Africa. My father told me that back in the 70s some French missionaries used to project Christian films in villages with the intent to educate/christianize a population that was mostly Muslim or Animist (my father remembers being subjected to a movie about the Nativity lol). But in the context of Cold War and decolonization, these attempts were only met with the disdain of the African populations. On the contrary, HK and Bollywood films soon gained popularity for their entertainment value and the fact that they were quite easy to understand among other things.
Back to me, my love for Bollywood took a sitback during the last three to four years because of a lack of interest I guess, and also because I entered a “classe préparatoire” (which according to Wikipedia consists of "two very intensive which act as a preparatory course (or cram school) with the main goal of training undergraduate students for enrolment in one of the grandes écoles. The workload is one of the highest in the world"). Consequently, I didn’t watch any Hindi films for more than two years. I’ve only recently started to re-watch them and I also ventured into the Southern industries (Tollywood and Kollywood). I must admit that I now anticipate the Telugu releases more than the Hindi ones.
FYI, my username means "Gold" (or more commonly "dear") in Telugu.

Thanks for the warm welcome, odadune! Actually, the guy on my avie is Pawan Kalyan BTW, I like your icon too. Though I'm not a fan of the Khiladi, I must admit that he was particularly handsome in that photoshoot...I wish he'd dress more often like that (so far, he has demonstrated a poor fashion sense in his films).

Welcome, Bangaram! I liked reading your intro! I just recently watched my first Telugu-industry film (Eega-- but it was dubbed in Hindi (with the title Makkhi), since that is how Netflix is streaming it). I loved it and hope to watch some more if I can find them!

Hey Jab, thanks for welcoming me! I’m really glad you liked my intro. I have yet to see Eega even though I’ve heard only good things about it (it’s at times like these that I wish Netflix was available in France). Anyway, if you wish to venture further into SI cinema, I’d recommend you watch the Telugu film Ishq (2012). It is a nice little rom-com with a hero that kind of reminds me of Shahid Kapoor (nope, I’m definitely not trying to bait you here ).

Heh, whoops! I can usually keep the youngish Telugu guys straight, but I have some trouble with the more established ones. re: my icon, thank you, and yeah, I hear you on Akshay's fashion sense; it says volumes that arguably his two best-dressed roles this decade were in films set in the fashion-impaired 80s. (And regrettably, he seems to be running true to form in the stills from his movie with Tamannaah.)

First film I saw him in was “Dosti : Friends Forever” and I didn’t pay any attention to the way he was dressed since he was lucky enough to co-star with Bobby Deol whose fashion style left way more to be desired. But after that, I saw a good portion of Akshay’s early 2000s nonsensical movies (Ajnabee, Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya Hai, Andaaz, Waqt, etc) and thought that this guy had got to have the worst style ever (well, only next to Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan at the time). Anyway, I looked at the stills from It’s Entertainment and, you’re right, it definitely doesn’t look good fashion-wise for Akshay lol. On the upside, Tamannaah looks gorgeous here !

Welcome to the forum! Africa was my first connection to Bollywood. I lived in Kenya for a while in the late 80's. Bollywood was and is hugely popular there so I began watching them then. We have a few west Africans on the old forum. I hope they make their way over here.

Greetings bangaram! Your intro is great and it's lovely to have someone new to the forum!! I've been creeping about and I really appreciate your take on things since you've joined. I'm also a big Tamannah fan -- have you seen Kalasala/Kalloori? It's not very well known but she has a good role in it and I really liked the film.

An American that discovers Indian cinema in Kenya… great premise for a quirky movie, don’t you think?

I’m glad you liked my intro and the few posts I have made so far. It seems that Tamannaah has her fair share of admirers on this forum. It makes me strangely happy XD I think she is one the most talented mainstream actress es of her generation. Now, I just wish she’d choose better roles. .. I have not seen Kalloori unfortunately :/ I found the film on the Internet but there weren’t subtitles. But I’m still on the lookout

Salut Bangaram,
I am a fan of India, including cinema, and it feels good to find people all over the world who share that. I was born in Canada, lived in Finland, Germany and Sweden, but mere dil (my heart) has gone to India. Among my top favs are also some telugu ones, the 2008 comedy 'Ready' is great, Nagesh Kukunoor, especially his 'Hyderabad Blues' and 'Bollywood calling' I like a lot. Kamalinee Mukerji I also like.
BR, Asko
