Hi everyone! This board change will take some getting used to, but I'm glad that it seems to be ticking right along! I wouldn't want to go without my Bollywhat fix.
So, we are all sort of starting over. Here is my story!
I met Bollywood sometime in the middle of 2011. If I had known what a significant event it would turn out to be, I would have noted the date with more exactness!
I had a nursing baby who would feed for a long time before going to bed for the night, but would doze off in the first few minutes, leaving me not much to do but sit there. So I fell into a routine of watching Netflix movies in installments each night. I had been watching a fair number of Japanese and Chinese films, and Netflix, of course, started recommending all sorts of international films to me. Including Jab We Met. I think I scrolled past it several times without much interest, and I'm afraid I don't really remember if there was a particular catalyst that made me press "play." I was just curious. I do remember that Netflix described it as a "breezy Bollywood romantic comedy" and I was in the mood for something light. I decided to give it a try.
Obviously, I loved it! I was intrigued from the get-go, but I really fell hard when the "Nagada Nagada" number came on. Here was something completely different, something electrifying and engaging, something I had never seen before. I loved the whole movie, too, the characters and music and humor and unabashed romance, and the lovely sounds of Hindi and the entire exotic feel of it to my US-bred view. I was beaming at the end, probably looking a bit foolish if anyone had been looking. As the credits scrolled down the screen, my immediate thought was, "I have to see more movies like this!"
I had heard of Bollywood, in that I knew that there were movies made in Mumbai called "Bollywood movies", and I had heard something about there being no kissing in them, and I had heard of Aishwarya Rai because she was declared the Most Beautiful Woman in the World by some magazine or something at one point, but other than that I knew absolutely nothing about it. I rewatched Jab We Met several times and then searched Netflix for more movies with Shahid Kapoor. This is not necessarily the best way to find good Bollywood movies, much as I love Shahid! I tried searching for movies with Kareena next, but this landed me with Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon and We Are Family, neither of which I was able to even finish. Finally, I went to the internet, and I found Bollywhat!
This forum has been so great! I have loved being able to soak up so many people's Bollywood enthusiasm, and I've learned so much! It's also great to be able to compare notes on films, most of which no one in my real life circle has ever seen.
I have now seen 85 Indian movies, mostly in Hindi, and I have a Netflix queue full of many many more! And I add to it all the time-- I've got a lifetime of Bollywood ahead of me!
