Hindi 'Rajkahini' to be set in Punjab, not Bangla border
He had set his magnum opus, 'Rajkahini,' in a brothel on the Bengal-Bangladesh border. And now, as Srijit Mukherji goes national, the action will move to the Radcliffe Line on the west, separating India and Pakistan. The movie's title has been locked as 'Begum Jaan' and will see Vidya Balan playing the character already made famous by Rituparna Sengupta. The decision to change the backdrop was taken by the producers. Said Mukesh Bhatt, "Srijit is one of the finest directors in the country today. And it's time he makes a debut nationally or even internationally. But as we tell the story of 'Rajkahini' to a larger audience, the canvas has to be bigger. The film's backdrop is the Punjab border. We are adapting the story to make it more national. Several real incidents from the Partition will be incorporated into the film, which, in turn, will change the texture to an extent." Mukesh added that though Vidya has already given her consent, the rest of the cast is yet to be finalised. Meanwhile, Kausar Muner, who wrote the dialogues for 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan,' is working on the screenplay. In Bengal, there's a lot of excitement about the project.And even though speculations were rife if Srijit will begin shooting the second edition of 'Kakababu' after his 'Zulfiqar,' sources say the Hindi film is indeed his next. So, when is the team starting to shoot? "Five months from now," said Mukesh. |

ANOTHER KAHANI FOR VIDYA BALAN By Avinash Lohana, Mumbai Mirror | Feb 6, 2016, The actress is all set to play the madam of a brothel in a post-Partition drama with the Bhatts. Mirror was the first to tell you (October 20) that Mahesh Bhatt was all gaga about his latest protege, Srijit Mukherji's Bengali film, Rajkahini, which he will be adapting in Hindi as the National Award-wining director's Bollywood launch. The film will be titled Begum Jaan after the main protagonist, the madam of the brothel, and Vidya Balan will be playing this feisty character played by Rituparna Sengupta in the original. "The re-worked adaptation will see Vidya in the most challenging role of her career. Srijit is by far the most talented filmmaker I've know," Bhatt told Mirror. Set to roll in June, the film follows the after effects of the Partition in Bengal in 1947, delving into the lives of 11 women living in a brothel that finds itself divided by the newly-chalked LOC, with half of the house now in India and the other half in Pakistan. The inmates are being urged to move out but knowing they will be savaged outside these walls they hold firm, despite growing pressure to vacate.
"Like Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil in their classic films, and my daughter Alia Bhatt in Highway, Rajkahini has one of the greatest performances by a woman " Rituparna Sengupta. The premise is thrilling and moved me to the core. The Hindi film will feature eight actresses, but will be ruled by Vidya," says Bhatt. Vidya admitted to having watched the film and thoroughly enjoying the period drama. "It's a powerful and moving film. Rituparna is wonderful and so is the rest of the cast. It's easily one of the most interesting scripts, I have got so far," she asserts. |

Bracing up for the Begum
Vidya Balan who plays the titular character in her next is prepping with horse-riding and voice training lessons. Vidya Balan who plays the madam of a brothel in Begum Jaan, the Hindi adaptation of National Award-winning filmmaker Srijit Mukherji's Bengali film, Rajkahini, is prepping up for the film which rolls from June 18 in Jharkhand. The 38-year-old actress will take up horse-riding and is undergoing vocal training to modulate her voice to suit the character. "Her character smokes hookah which makes one's voice grainy. Vidya already has a timbre of the voice but we want to make it grainier, hence the workshops with her during different times of the day to identify the right texture that will suit the character," informs Srijit who has been spending hours with the Kahaani actress developing a back story for Begum Jaan, including the character's attitude towards men and her thoughts on sexuality. "We have been improvising on certain scenes which won't be in the film but will help Vidya get a better grip on the character and her life. In fact, she got emotional while reciting poetry about partition, the revolution and the pain, themes which are very close to Begum Jaan's character," asserts Srijit, who will shoot the film in Punjab and Delhi as well. Vidya who will speak in Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi has a trainer to help her out.
