I once saw a charming film with Aishwarya Rai filmed in Bengali, titled "Chokher Bali". If anyone has knowledge of Bengali cinema, can you recommend similar films? I mean period films, preferably based on a novel, in bengali language. Thanks in advance!

I don't know the Bengali film industry (Tollywood) myself, but Wikipedia.org has a good article entitled "Cinema of West Bengal" which lists actors, actresses, four producers, many directors, and links to a "List of Bengali films." Note that the "Prosenjit" listed is Prosenjit Chattergee, who has a good Wiki article too. Dancelover I once saw a charming film with Aishwarya Rai filmed in Bengali, titled "Chokher Bali". I don't know why I missed this thread before.
I mostly watch older Bengali films, but I can recommend a few new ones. Chokher Bali was directed by Rituparno Ghosh, and you would probably enjoy his other movies as well. [If you will permit a brief, non-Bengali rec: Raincoat also has Aishwarya Rai, with Ajay Devgn, and has a very similar feel, although it's a Hindi film. I think Ghosh was really good at getting good performances from Aishwarya, and Ajay is good in this also. It's visual poetry also--I saw it several years ago and still remember a gorgeous shot of a rickshaw in the rain.] A Bengali film I would recommend by him is Unishe April, which has Aparna Sen and Prosenjit whom you saw in Chokher Bali. I adore it. It is a lovely nuanced film about the relationship between a mother (Aparna) and daughter. Totally passes the Bechdel test.
If you want to delve into older films, my favorite classic Bengali movies are Chowringhee, starring Uttam Kumar and Biswajit (Prosenjit's father). It takes place in a high-class hotel and deals with a number of different stories. My other recommendation is Barnali, with Sharmila Tagore and Soumitra Chatterji. It's a love story--poor girl, rich boy, etc., but so different from Hindi iterations of this theme. Bengali films of the time are really restrained compared to Hindi films and to me they seem a bit more sophisticated (although there are lots of exceptions).
I hope you find one you like. I always like leading someone down the rabbit hole of Bengali cinema.
