Am a wee bit excited - I'm going to Melbourne in August for the 2016 Indian Film Festival www.iffm.com.au/index.html
The thing to be a little less excited about is that I'll be staying at my son's house (a shared house) and will have a bed in a space under the stairs (not quite as bad as Harry Potter's cupboard under the stairs, perhaps).
I have a plan to see 14 or 15 films in the 10 day period.
Nil Battey Sanata - starring Swara Bhaskar & Ratna Pathak Shah. A lovely 'life' story about a single mother and her battle with her teenage daughter over education and the opportunity for a better life.
Azhar - it was just OK. I was more concerned about whether Nargis Fakhri has had her already full lips augmented a bit more - they seemed much bigger than I remember from previous movies I have seen her in. (I had the same problem watching P.K. - Anushka and her collagen fillers (or whatever) )
Awaara - have been meaning to watch the DVD for ages and set aside yesterday afternoon for that. Not disappointed and Nargis is/was so lovely And I was able to get a screen capture of the scene where Leela is knitting baby clothes - for a friend of mine who 'collects' pics of knitting scenes from movies and TV shows. A pity the song s weren't subtitled.
The Blue Umbrella - just delightful. One little bit of a song has the same tune as 'You Are My Soniya' from K3G
Not a movie but 3 episodes watched one after the other which made it movie length - an Indian TV series I came across on Netflix - Stories of Rabindranath Tagore. The first story (3 episodes) was Chokher Bali. It was rather gorgeously filmed and well produced and acted. I don't know how it compares to the written story but I will have to watch the 2003 Chokher Bali with Aishwarya to see how the 2 compare.
I'd really like to see this--maybe I can watch on Netflix when I go to the States in August. The 2003 Chokher Bali is gorgeous but changes the ending and my Bengali friends all hate it. I have also read the book and think it would be quite difficult to film, since Tagore shows the inner thoughts of the characters and a lot of the plot is them misunderstanding each other. The movie makes it quite difficult to understand Binodini's motivation for anything.
I'm enjoying this TV series, a nice production - and the last few scenes of each episode introduces characters from the following episode.
For first pick either Om Shanti Om or Rab Ne Bana di Jodi - they are the ones that got me hooked. Second pick (and it's hard to know what to pick - too many choices) - Haider, such a contrast to the other 2 and it is just so good.

Yesterday I did the Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham watchalong with moviemavengal, mredlich, mredlich's publisher and a couple of other viewers - tweeting (on Twitter - not whistling to ourselves, hee hee) as we watched. It was great fun and I hope we do it again sometime.
I watched on Netflix, one of the others was using a Bluray dvd, not sure about the others.
Sarbjit - saw last week in the cinema - an audience of 2 (mid-week, mid-afternoon). Was very good but so sad. Drunk guy blunders onto Pakistan territory - knee jerk reaction "He must be a spy". And such inhumane treatment. Heartbreaking.
A re-watch of Fan.
And after 10 days of no internet or home wifi connection - some national outage in Telstra fried a whole load of modems. Much time spent in online chat with Telstra to try and get connection going again. Telstra customers were in uproar. Took them days to figure out what the problem was and send out replacement modems. - anyway, finally properly connected again so have caught up on a few more episodes of House of Cards on Netflix and tomorrow will be able to join the audience in dontcallitbollywood.com/2016/05/31/want-to-watch-a-movie-with-me-virtually/
Khoon Bhari Maang - I was first made aware of this movie by Beth (from the Beth Loves Bollywood Blog) and, since I had seen the Austarlian mini-series on which it's based when I was in school, I was curious to see the Indian remake. Some observations:
Could Rekha's dad be more stupid? (said in my best Chandler from Friends voice)
I thought the dog doctor stuff was silly
I loved Raja the dancing horse
Rekha's character was a complete wet blanket in the beginning; I'm glad that she developed a backbone in the end
I love it when Rekha is in full diva mode; I loved those photoshoots of her with the gold outfits and turbans
Kabir Bedi you silver-tongued devil
I'm glad they kept the crocodile.
On the whole, it was very enjoyable.
A while ago sunset had asked for good Shilpa Shetty performances and odadune had recommended Dhadkan and since it stars Akki and is neither a comedy nor an action film, I put it on my to watch list. As For Shilpa's performance, at times I found her good and at others she was too dramatic and over the top however, I don't blame her; I blame the director since all the actors at some point were too dramatic and over the top.
I don't know how anyone would fall in love with Sunil Shetty's character - he had such a huge chip on his shoulder, was incredibly possessive and his behaviour when he met Shilpa's parents was unacceptable.
{Click to view!} As for Shilpa's father, he stops Shilpa as she's on her way to elope with Sunil Shetty and tells her that he's not the type of man to force her to do as he wants but she'll only marry Sunil Shetty over his dead body and, as he's saying this, he puts a gun in Shilpa's hands, presses the gun against his chest and tells her to shoot him! No, not influencing her at all! Since Shilpa can't be happy if she hurts her parents, she agrees to marry Akki and leave Sunil Shetty.
And yet, despite all this, and a speech by Shilpa that girls should do as their parents want, I enjoyed Dhadkan. Akki was so cute and adorable and he and Shilpa made such a cute couple (I think that they were still together when this was filmed but the old adage about real-life couples not having any chemistry on the big screen isn't true here.) Akki, Shilpa's, and to a lesser extent, Mahima Chaudhry's (I only say to a limited extent because she had such a small part and very little screen-time) charm that elevated this film. In addition, the film had a happy ending and it had a positive message.
{Click to view!} During her wedding ceremony, Shilpa is either looking incredibly sad or crying (understandably so); her parents look upset and keep giving each other quilty looks; Akki and his family are either looking uneasy or wondering what's going on. Contrast this with Kal Ho Na Ho (admitedly, a film I'm not fond of) when Preity and Saif get married, Preity is bawling her eyes out and everybody, including Saif, is happy and smiling!
Manish Malhotra did a good job with Shilpa's and Mahima's wardrobes - both women were wearing some very pretty outfits.
I love those ginormous houses with the wide, sweeping staircases that rich people live in in Bollywood films; Akki and Shilpa's bedroom was larger than my flat.
I had to google to find out what mini-series you were referring to - Return to Eden. What a hoot, lol. I remember watching it back in the day.
Dumb question - how to pronounce the title of this movie?
It's like "teen"
I watched the trailer and answered my question. Ha ha.
Thank you
