Internet Movie Database contributor Jugnalv made his own List for IMDb of THE 25 BEST INDIAN ACTRESSES. He made this list in 2012, and updated it in January 2015.
His list will be Controversial!! First, although he says "Indian," he only considered Bollywood actresses. No Bhanumathi, Varalakshmi, Pandari, Sowkar, Padmini, etc.
Second, within that stricture, most of his 25 would be in anybody's top 25, though not necessarily in his order.
Now, here is Jugnalv's List: 1 Kajol 2 Nutan 3 Jaya Badhuri (!) (we know she's great, but this great?) 4 Madhuri Dixit 5 Meena Kumari 6 Hema Malini 7 Madhubala 8 Rekha 9 Nargis 10 Aishwarya Rai Bachchan 11 Sridevi 12 Asha Parekh 13 Kamini Kaushal (oldest on list) 14 Shabana Azmi 15 Juhi Chawla 16 Kareena Kapoor 17 Priyanka Chopra 18 Rani Mukerjee 19 Dehpika Padukone 20 Kharisma Kapoor 21 Preity Zinta 22 Anushka Sharma 23 Dimple Kapadia 24 Vidya Balan 25 Tabu

Dancelover's responses: Most prominent not-on-list: Waheeda Rehman. Surprisingly low: Madhuri, Nargis, Sridevi, Juhi, Rani, Tabu. Surprisingly high: (No, I won't answer that one - take that 10-foot-pole away from me! ) I remember a 2010 TimesOfIndia poll of about 3,000 respondents. Madz was given 53.5%, Sri 40%, 22 other women split the remaining 6.5%. PC was too young & inexperienced to be in that poll. Dancelover's own list of top BW actresses, in order of birth, not judging relative abilities: Nargis, Meena Kumari, Madhubala, Waheeda Rehman, Nutan, Vyjayanthimala, Hema Malini, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patel, Sridevi, Madhuri, Juhi, Manisha Koirala, Tabu, Aishwarya, Kajol, Rani, Vidya, Kareena, Priyanka, Dehpika, Anushka Sharma. It's a discussion-provoking list, for sure. One question I have to ask myself when thinking about lists like this is, what do I mean by "best"? Do I mean, the ones I find the most appealing? The ones I think were best at what they were given to do? The ones I think could do the widest variety of things? All of these questions are subjective anyhow, and usually they tend to get blended together. For example, a list that puts Kajol at the top is almost shamelessly subjective. Kajol is probably the most appealing to the person who compiled this list, but a better actor than Jaya Bhaduri (who, by the way, IS that great, yes )? Than Shabana Azmi? Than Vidya or Tabu? Than Smita Patil who does not even make this person's list? Yeah, no, not by any measure, no. The only sense in which I could see Kajol topping any list of Hindi film actors is if you rank in terms of "best at what they were given to do". Even then I wouldn't put her first (Sridevi, Hema Malini, Madhubala, Madhuri, and others would come ahead in my opinion) but you would at least have an argument to stand on. And what on earth is Karishma Kapoor doing on anyone's list of best actors? All of that said, I'm not going to attempt my own ranking. I can talk for hours about the strengths and weaknesses of any actor I've seen enough of, and I might even be able to compare them in twos and threes, but I'm not going to attempt to rank or even choose a top 25. What criteria would you use to pull together such a list?

What criteria would you use to pull together such a list? Personally, I don't get why Kajol is that high on the list. Quite frankly, I feel that she's overrated as an actress - while I've appreciated her work in DDLJ and Gupt, I can't stand her antics in KKHH and K3G - she is far too loud and over-the-top. I understand that the character is meant to be like that, but there has to be a certain sincerity to it, which she fails to bring forth in these films. I actually think Karishma Kapoor is an excellent performer, though I could see why one couldn't. For her pre-1997 films, you kind of have to see beyond her garish fashion sense and look at her efforts to shine even in the worst of B-grade films. Some of her earlier performances I appreciate are Anari, where she plays a village girl, and Dhanwaan, where she plays a wealthy and timid girl who is constantly under illness. Her post-'97 films like Dil To Pagal Hai, Biwi No. 1, Fiza, and Zubeidaa gave her ample opportunity to perform well.

A year earlier, in 2011,, another IMDb contributor, "vijay536," made his own list: Top Ten Indian Actresses. His choices, including 4 Southern actresses, are 1 Asin (Thottumkal) 2 Padmini; 3 Sridevi; 4 Madhuri Dixit; 5 Kajol; 6 Rani Mukerji; 7 Meera Jasmine; (born in Kerala 1982; credited with 53 films since 2001 in South.) 8 Priyamani; 9 Sushmita Sen; 10 Kareena Kapoor
Padmini is his only choice who is older than Sridevi, and not still alive.
Common to both his and Jugnalv's lists: Sri, Madz, Kajol (sorry Carla), Rani, Kareena.

ISTR reading, back in 2009, a poll of "1990s-only top actresses" with 37 contributors. Some voted for 1 only, some for best 3, 4,or 5, some for as many as 10. ISTR Madz got 30 firsts, Sri 6, and Kajol got the other one. Madz also got 7 seconds, with Sri & Kajol splitting almost all of (less than 30) others. So it is not unusual for Kajol to be high-placed on these lists. Lists of "best since Sri & Madz went on maternity leave" are likely to have Kajol on top, if only by inheiritance and seniority. Then there is "most Filmfare Actress Awards won:" Kajol's four tie with her Aunt Nutan for first in that. Dancelover It's a discussion-provoking list, for sure. Oh goodness, I don't think I could skillfully put together a list like this. I'll try it after I've seen a hundred more films!

Would love to hear what you think when you get there - because like me you share a love of old films but I am sort of cold on both Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar. So I'm curious to know whether we would end up agreeing more about the women.

I'm really warming up to Madhubala, whom I know you love. And to be honest (and off-topic in a ladies thread) I'm cooling off on Dilip. There's something about him in every performance that rubs me the wrong way. Have not yet managed to find a movie where he doesn't at least slightly put me off.
