Stage Name: Akshay Kumar (apparently taken in honor of Aaj, the first movie to give him a bit part, where leading man Kumar Gaurav played a character named Akshay) Real Name: Rajiv Hari-Om Bhatia Birthdate: September 9, 1967 Wife: Tina (aka Twinkle) Khanna, daughter of Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Khanna Children: son Aarav (b. 2002) and daughter Nitara (b. 2012) Defining traits: workaholic mixed martial artist and body nazi. He has a resume of like 105 movies released to date, and if his health and ability to convince people that he belongs in their films holds up, I fully expect him to pass the 120-movie mark around the time he turns 50. From things he's said in interviews, I think his wife kind of hopes he will retire when he can no longer handle lead roles, but if he does turn character actor, watch out: he will be in EVERYTHING like Anupam Kher and Gulshan Grover were in the 90s. Okay, I don't blame anybody who doesn't like this guy. His taste in film projects ranges from the sort of interesting to the terrible, his comedy is an acquired taste at best, his beloved action setpieces borrow heavily from his hero Jackie Chan, and about the best anyone can say about his private life is that he loves his children and isn't into alcohol, drugs or late night parties. But he was one of the first Hindi-speaking male actors to make a positive impression on me; I had a soft spot for him even in the dark days of 2009-2011, when nearly everything he did flopped or barely broke even; and thanks to a couple of rare attacks of good judgment on his part (aka Rowdy Rathore and Special 26) that soft spot has gotten a lot softer over the past year or so.       |

 Okay, #3 of this basic shirt design to show up; he also owns one in black and one in dusty lavender. Think I prefer either of those colors, partly because they're not in shiny fabrics.  Love these two, wish they'd work together, have the impression they get along pretty well, too bad they always manage to look their worst when they're hanging out together...this is the least-bad of the several available pics of them at this party.  hanging around the VIPs, are we? I had no idea Akshay Kumar wasn't his real name. Heh, I didn't have his real name committed to memory until this past year or so, but I remember stumbling across his wikipedia page quite early in my Bollyviewing time and thinking "huh, no wonder he changed it." (Akshay means "eternal" or "limitless" in Sanskrit.) More pics...  Song shoot for Holiday, probably the equivalent to Thuppaki's "Antarctica". Maintaining his longstanding tradition of being one of the most weirdly dressed men of his generation in Bollywood.  This past Diwali, with his wife and fashion photographer Daboo Ratnani and Daboo's wife.  Okay, the electric blue shirt is more palatable with his current favorite gunmetal-gray suit jacket over it. And some attachments. The first is him coming out of a multiplex today after watching a movie (probably R...Rajkumar), looking more presentable than he usually does for these "watching other people's movies" outings. The second is my favorite of the Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Dobaara posters, and the third is some fan art I did for the Thuppaki remake back when it was still called Pistol. |

A couple weeks ago at work, I had an extremely stressful morning, and was looking forward to an even more stressful afternoon, when I was trolling the internet on my smartphone on lunchbreak, and lo and behold, the day got a lot cheerfuller:
Admittedly, he looks like he's promoting Captain Morgan rum rather than a jazz/fusion/new age album by a Karnatakan musician who's a friend of his, but, hell, that was part of what amused me.

He's made several public appearances lately, mostly marred by stupid hats, annoying sunglasses, a possible gain in weight, and other factors-about a week ago, his wife was hospitalized with kidney stones, and although he stuck pretty close to her side through most of it, he had to put in a brief appearance at Mahalaxmi racecourse for one of the umpteen brands he represents, and his disinterest and distraction in the video footage was palpable. Great clothes, though.
This is about the best of his pics from the recent Auto Expo this past weekend-nice smile, angle that doesn't emphasize the paunch, and yay, no hat or sunglasses.
I also kind of like this one, if only because the skinny jeans, unlaced boots and giant belt buckle are exactly the kind of thing he used to wear back in the 90s.
From the Auto Expo in Delhi, he flew back to Mumbai to promote Holiday (his upcoming Thuppaki remake) at an awards event, performing a stunt/dance number at 3am, with his son in the audience. (way past both their bedtimes, I'm sure). The buzz seems to have been positive (the event won't air for another couple weeks), but the initial stills to leak out are kind of bad. I liked this one though:

I just can't get used to Beardy!Akki, but GreyBeardy!Akki keeps making me think of Kenny Rogers. Clean-shaven Akki for me, plus he does look nice in a suit. |
