Well, I stayed up until 2:30 am watching this film last night. Then got up this morning and watched it twice more. I haven't obsessed over a film like that since I don't know when. I think I watched Band Baaja Baarat twice in a row the first time I saw it and I know I watched Dirty Dancing a million times when I was like 12:)
I was actually very ambivalent about DDD before finally watching it. I really liked Luck By Chance, but recently I lost a bit of my love of ZNMD after rewatching it and finding that it really does suffer from lack of good editing and an overabundance of whiney or self-congratulatory self-help crap. And can Abhay Deol just go away? Road, Movie and Dev D. were good despite him and he's just not a good actor. And on an extremely shallow note, I just think he's kind of funny looking.
Anyway, I was thinking I wouldn't enjoy DDD because so many reviews emphasized the whole "rich people problems" and I've always disliked Priyanka Chopra (only tolerating her in Dostana and Salaam-E-Ishq). But I knew the production design and cinematography would be beautiful to see and I do enjoy Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma and I have a weird thing for Farhan Akhtar and specifically his voice. It's more his speaking voice...it just does it for me. Even his singing voice, which most people hate, I enjoy.
I found the film overlong but almost always compelling. The lead characters all had relatable issues and the acting was spot on, even the actresses playing Noorie and Divya were able to shine. The actor playing Rana was a bit weak. I absolutely loved the brother-sister chemistry between Singh and Chopra. Absolutely believable. I can't believe I'm saying this but I'm glad Ranbir Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor pulled out of this film. They would have been interesting to watch, of course, but that would have been too stunt cast-y.
Another small but meaningful thing I liked about this film was the attention to detail with the selection of extras. So often in Hindi films, random extras with lines in English are acted or dubbed so poorly it takes you out of the flow of the film. Not in Zoya's film.
The humor in DDD was also not forced like it was in ZNMD, thanks mostly to Ranveer Singh. That guy is a force to be reckoned with. His chemistry with Anushka Sharma is as strong as ever and his versatility is growing with each film.
