From the recently viewed movies thread. Piku- heartwarming and endearing movie. Made you laugh shed a tear and get annoyed with the characters. Amitabh was great played his role really well Deepika was amazing she is really impressing me and is growing as an actress she lived the character irfan was good too actually all the cast were well suited. Enjoyed the movie the songs that were played flowed with the movie. Enjoyable.

Rediff's Sukanya Verma loved it: Piku, a gem of a film!So did I. The three leads are brilliant, the supporting cast are great, and the script is intelligent, moving, and witty. A must-see film. (And I want to live in their house in Kolkata.)

Saw this in the theater today. It was a 12:40 showing on a Monday, so obviously the theater was pretty deserted (still have yet to catch a Bolly flick in a completely empty theater, though!).
It wasn't quite what I expected, but I liked it anyway. What I mean by the expectations is that the trailer made it out to be more...feel-good? Which I guess it was, in a way, but there were also a lot of somber moments as well. It really reminded me of Little Miss Sunshine...a broken family embarking on a road trip and coming out on the other end for the better.
Deepika's performance as Piku was by far her best I've seen from her (bearing in mind I haven't seen all of her films). She's a very real and relatable character. Amitabh and Irrfan also played their parts well, but it was really Deepika's film. She stole the show; commanded the screen. I was very proud to see her handle this role so well. She took you along for the ride!
And I agree with MrB above...that Kolkata house was GORGEOUS.

We saw it. I am mixed. I think it would have been funnier if I hadn't lived the whole scenario, including the potty problems with a difficult selfish nasty old man. Yet it was a good film with really good acting. My sister said I should be proud of myself as I has a LOT more patience than out Piku.

review by Rajiv Vijayakar for www.koimoi.com 5/12/15 He *luved* Dehpika in it! "... master actress & first complete superstar package after Madhuri Dixit & Kajol, etches another memorable persona & matches (Amitaub & Irrfan), going beyond the script as always." Dancelover

I'll try my best with a review, as I saw Piku on the fly last weekend and it has been a long week between now and then. I thought it was absolutely wonderful. The homes were all very much to my liking, and the Calcutta home! oo la la! To me it looked familiar, like I had I seen it in another movie, and I was thinking is this the only ancestral haveli in Calcutta?! Eventually I remembered it might have been in Vicky Donor where I saw it. Then I read that Piku's director Soojit Sircar, also directed Vicky Donor! So I am assuming it was the same one and he is very much liking using that house, and who wouldn't! Even the Delhi house I really loved. The whole look, atmosphere and styling of the movie was excellent and very attractive but in no way overdone or filmy. I liked seeing things of India I had never seen before, like the modern day roadside dhaba.
The acting, directing and writing were all fantastic. I liked how it didn't get too sentimental or cheesy, which it could have certainly done esp. with the dynamic between Irffan and Amit's characters after they reach Calcutta. It was refreshing, but not at all twee and cutesy. Actually this is a classic road movie ~ with the layers of bittersweet, humor, relationship challenges and personal growth. Great chemistry between Deepika and Amitabh, and honestly I have not seen him in any of his "older" roles other than K3G and Bagban and was glad to see him in a role with more humor and edge, kind of like what he did back the 70/80s. Maybe there are some more recent movies like than but I always get the impression that he plays roles now that don't bank on his comedic talent. Deepika keeps hitting them out of the park. I don't seem to be making very good decisions lately, but going to see this on a whim was definitely one for the "good" column.
Edit - shouldn't have made a definitive statement about elder Amit I forgot about his roles in Veer-Zaara and Bunty aur Babli.

I also want to say that as mentioned from a review above, I would have to respectfully disagree that this movie is not truly heartwarming and endearing. Amit's character is humorous but he is not an endearing old man, he is quite a piece of work and pretty challenging and Deep's character is only a shade or two off her father. But they are in no way unlikable characters.

An absolute delight from beginning to end. I'd been off movies for 3 months (owing to having to holding my daughter's hand, metaphorically speaking, in her run up to high school final exams in March). What a great end to the famine, ha! It's easy to go wrong with potty humor, but Piku's writers positively endowed the dialogues with elegance! This is the kind of talk that, sooner or later, features among families universally. One no longer expects anything but spot on acting by Amitabh and Irrfan. But it's Deepika who emerges tops , and that is really saying something. Acting chops apart, she is such a visual treat in this film - please God, I hope I never have to see her again shimmying to silly item numbers again.

I was going to hit the "Like" button ... until I read the last line. As Dancelover, I must assure you that there is no such thing as "a silly Item Number." An absolute delight from beginning to end. I was going to hit the "Like" button ... until I read the last line. As Dancelover, I must assure you that there is no such thing as "a silly Item Number." No issues Dancelover, to each her own ! The world seems to love Bollydancing these days, who am I to deprive anyone of that? It's just that here in India, we get an overdose of it whether we want it or not and that can get really wearisome. I mean seriously, every single party, wedding, festival or event of some sort, one ends up hearing the same set of 3-4 current hits, typically the racy, pelvic-thrusty numbers until one is ready to head to the Himalayas for complete silence. Something else that also vexes me greatly is watching innocent little kids lip syncing and thrusting to raunchy lyrics and hip moves...ewww...with proud parents beaming at their talented offspring. WTF That's where my comment came from. Maybe it's my advancing age as well...but I feel sad that wonderfully talented, beautiful actors like Deepika, Kareena and Priyanka reduce themselves to marketing gimmicks like item songs. Such stuff is best left to the Malaikas who can't act but do add spice with their random film appearances.

The first half hour of this movie annoyed the crap out of me!! I couldn't take the constant stress that everyone was under. It made me feel stressed - not something I needed. But it definitely did get better.

Juhi Chaturvedi was the Screenwriter of both Vicki Donor and Piku!
Another candidate for Screenwriter's Hall Of Fame! D
