Time Out magazine gathered a pretty diverse group of writers (including a couple of my friends) to weigh in on this Top 100 list. I haven't had a chance to browse it fully but it already received some indignant responses on my Facebook wall. www.timeout.com/london/film/the-100-best-bollywood-moviesWhat do you guys think?

Some are really not so good and they left a lot of good ones off. But I have seen 68 of the movies listed.

Andaz Apna Apna is way too high. I get that everybody likes it, and I did too, but I don't think it's Top 20 worthy. I just watched Sholay and loved it, so have to concur with that #1

I've seen 35 on the list. I didn't think Ek Tha Tiger was THAT good, dunno why it's on the list. There are plenty in that Top 100 to add to the 'To Be Watched' list

I just watched Sholay and loved it, so have to concur with that #1 The Indian experience of Andaz Apna Apna is very, very different from the outsider's experience - especially Indians of a certain age. I think watching it as an outsider and an adult, regardless of how much filmi knowledge one has acquired (as it is really one movie-joke after another) simply cannot compare to watching it from within the culture as a child or a teenager. If you try to put yourself in those shoes, it becomes clearer why it is so beloved, especially by the generation to which most of the contributors to this list. It's the difference between watching a cute movie and having a comforting experience that brings you back to your happiest youthful memories in life. Sholay is very special and it is indeed no surprise that it would take the number 1 spot.

I may as well add, I've also seen 68 of them (including 18 of the top 20), and of the remainder, most are already on my "to get to someday" list; a few are in my collection waiting to be got to sooner than later.
I don't really have opinions on "the greatest" and I'm not sure what I would have done had I would have been asked to contribute (well yes I am, I would have jumped for joy and then agonized for weeks trying not to make an idiot of myself with my poorly-informed choices).
Maybe I'll ponder a top-10 of my own - "greatest" as opposed to "my favorites" (which is a little bit lower-pressure as far as the implications go).

I didn't know how beloved it was to that certain generation growing up in the early '90s.

Aside from the top 40 this looks like a lot of cheesy movies mixed in with a lot of greats. Dhoom better than Salaam Bombay? Mujhse Dosti Karogi?? They did a good job including all of the notable Bollywood films, I just think someone was asleep on quality control hehe. But this list will be a great reference in adding more films to my "to watch" list. : )

The list is very interesting. But how is it prepared, I mean how is it known that which is the best?
