First weekend: 1.4 crores. (per Box OfficeIndia)
How can a Rekha film possibly earn so little? Koimoi's reviewer has an answer: too preachy.
www.koimoi.com/reviews/super-nani-review/
"... sappily preaches ... moralities that Indian society functions on." "lame film" "boring"
Rekha plays a grandmother who is disrespected by her family, until Eldest Grandson (Sharman) returns from America and ...
Somehow this plot reminds me of English Vinglish, except that Sridevi had a *much* better script!
Dancelover celebrating my 500th post. Five Stars!!!!!

I had thousands of posts on the old site. I saw the film and it was very heavy handed. Preachy and the writer must have had a baseball bat at hand. I enjoyed Rekha, but the rest was loud, over the top and strident. Abused all the way and accepts it as normal. I think the message was to get it out there that abusive behavior should not be tolerated.

Corbie, can you compare "Super Nani" to "English Vinglish?"
Obvious First Difference is in the titles: E-V must obviously contain humor, while S-N seems as serious, and cartoonish, as Superman. Dancelover

English Vinglish was sweet and even though they were disrespecting Shridevi it wasn't over the top. The progression of the story was normal. She went to learn English. He family loves her even if they are taking her for granted. I loved the French character and how they interacted. No common language needed.
Also the story wasn't outlandish and Shridevi doesn't go and become rich and famous in a week. And in Super Nani she humiliates her family to teach them a lesson. And scares them in a very over the top medical scene.
My only gripe about English Vinglish is something I see in the Indian culture and others too when an English speaker is trying to speak another language the people laugh or make fun. I have never met anyone here who laughs at someone trying to speak English. If they exist I have never met them.
I would see English Vinglish again and probably will. No desire to see Super Nani again.

Thank you very much, Corbie. I deem this an Important Comparison, with many good points. I must say that I have heard people sneered at for speaking English in ways that the auditor doesn't like.
And then there are all of the False Rules (mostly taken from Latin) about Split Infinitives, Ending Sentences With Prepositions, etc. Howard "Dancelover" Wilkins
