Aamir's playing a wrestler, the director worked on Chillar Party and more recently Bhoothnath Returns. We don't know who the production company is. www.asianage.com/bollywood/aamir-khan-s-next-titled-dungal-923Aamir's supposed already started training for the part-if you see pictures during PK promos where he seems unusually bulky, it might be related to this.

That would be a gutsy and commendable move on his part, given that she's played Sunny Deol's love interest in an unreleased film and officially isn't too far off in age from Katrina, who played his love interest in Dhoom 3.
The other rumor going around is that he's either already filming or about to start, and he's hustling on it (by Aamir standards) because he wants to wrap it up and then play the villain in S. Shankar's rumored Endhiran 2 (or Robot 2, as the Bollywood press calls it).

It would be nice to see them break away and start accepting roles like this, or at least with heroines closer to their own age. And if Aamir leads the way on that, well, then, peachy! I'm really excited for this film. The last Bollywood sports biopic I watched was Mary Kom and I really enjoyed that.

But in Dangal seeing as Aamir will play the character from his 19 to his 50, the change of looks may be prepare the audience to him as the father of Kangna. Also, she just denied being approached for the part. It may be true because it's an Aamir Khan movie and Kangna may not have something meaty to chew on in this ; then again, Aamir being the marketer that he is may want to do a an event out of the announcement of the cast. The Khans may not be getting any younger but they're still young enough to romance girls from Anushka, Sonam and Kangna's generation. In real life it's not uncommon to see couple with an "important" age gap. Also, the Khans tends to do roles their age. Heroines their age are married or irrelevant and it's producers and directors who choose which actress they want in their movie. I don't think the Khans are from those who mingle too much in the selection of the female lead of their movie. I'm not really a fan of biopics but I'll be watching it as I plan to do with Mary Kom and BMB.

I don't know about Aamir and Salman, but SRK was married before he even went to Mumbai to become a big star.

I think the comment is more about the fact that women in the Indian film industries tend to retire from acting after marriage, so that there's a very limited pool of actresses who are sort of contemporary with/not egregiously young in comparison to the 90s veterans (most people bend a point to include women who debuted in the late 90s/early 00s, which is about 10-12 years after Salman and Aamir got their first starring roles).
My own feeling is that the established stars don't work with women their own age because those women have either removed themselves frm the rat-race or (like Madhuri or the somewhat younger Aish and Kajol, and the much younger Vidya) gotten to the point where they can headline their own movies, so they don't take love interest roles any more for the same reason Saif doesn't take comedic second-hero roles in 2-hero masalas (the kind of thing he did in the 90s), meaning that they're big enough names not to need it. With that being the case, it's logical for the big name, late-twenties/early-thirties heroines to gravitate to the big-budget, guaranteed hit Khan and Hrithik projects (where they can at least get a big paycheck), or to youth-oriented projects that give them better roles, leaving the producers of Ajay/Akshay/Saif's movies to round up whoever they can afford in the way of heroines, usually someone young and/or not that well-known who is trying to raise their profile.
Basically, the 40-49yr-old man/23-28yr-old woman pairings are the products of economics and logistics-who's available, who behaves professionally, who brings some kind of buzz to the project, who's affordable-combined with aspects of Indian culture (women marrying younger, women retiring from work after marriage).

Reading all the comments above, you all have good points about the age gap. I'm not saying it's wrong - stuff like that happens in real life happens all the time - I'm just saying I'm not a huge fan, unless they look pretty close in age on screen. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. SRK and Deepika in HNY was just...creepy. OTOH, SRK and Deepika looked just fine, IMO, in Chennai Express. I dunno, it's a case-by-case thing for me.

That's a totally understandable approach to take, emily-at the end of the day, everybody's watching these movies for entertainment (ok, and out of loyalty to our favorite actors), and if we come up against something we find offputting or aesthetically displeasing we call them out on it.
I kind of rambled on about the age gap thing because sometimes commenters on places like Pinkvilla act like there's some kind of huge conspiracy that causes this stuff to happen, when it's more a set of cultural defaults that the big name stars and producers have some, but not a lot of, control over.

In Aamir's case I feel like he's just looking too old to be with 20-something girls, unless they really cake him up with make-up. SRK and Salman can pull this off a little better. I know things probably won't change due to logistics but hey, a girl can dream lol

Latest rumor was that they were having trouble finding someone to play the main "grownup daughter" role, because the character was only present in the second half, and had relatively few scenes with Aamir. One of the people in the running was Taapsee Pannu, who had a gritty, fairly impressive Krav Maga fight scene in Baby.
If true, the one rumor sounds to me like most of the first half is him raising his daughters as children/teenagers.

MEET AAMIR KHAN’S WRESTLER DAUGHTERS By Roshmila BhattacharyaIt's not Kangana Ranaut or Tapsee Pannu but Fatima Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra who will star in Dangal. For weeks now, there has been plenty of speculation around who will play Aamir Khan's daughters in his upcoming sports biopic Dangal. From Kangana Ranaut and Tapsee Pannu to Urvashi Rautela, several actresses were believed to be in the race. But Mirror can now reveal that Fatima Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra have bagged the much coveted roles after months of auditions. Fatima is a Mumbai girl, has acted in a few films and a TV serial and dabbled in photography. Sanya, born and brought up in Delhi, is a trained ballet dancer.
Dangal directed by Nitesh Tiwari, is inspired by the story of former wrestler Mahavir Singh, from Haryana's Balali village, who built an 'akhara' in his own house and coached his daughters to historic wins in what was primarily a man's sport then. Geeta Phogat was India's first female wrestler to win gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the 55-kg free-style category. Her sister, Babita Kumari, bagged the silver. They became role models in the conservative Jat community and a 'dangal' pit was dug in Bhiwani's Government College for local female grapplers to hone their skills. In an earlier interview to Mirror (March 4), Aamir Khan who plays an ageing ex-wrestler with four daughters, two of whom are young adults, had waved off the buzz, saying, "Casting is one of the biggest challenges. Work is in progress, no decision has been taken yet by Nitesh." He had then pointed out: "Dangal is not just a film about wrestling but an emotional journey of a father and his two daughters, which teaches us to empower our girls." After months of talent scouting, casting director Mukesh Chhabria finally decided on these two girls in consultation with the director and the film's star producer. While the film will focus on the two girls who at the age of 20 and 22 made history, a search is still on for actors who will play their younger versions. Those two will also have to wrestle onscreen as the Phogat sisters started wrestling at the age of 10 and by 12 were travelling to neighbouring villages in Haryana to take part in dangals (competitions) in which they beat their male opponents.
