We don't know too much about this yet. It's a Dharma romcom; Varun's character is obsessed with cricket and finding a bride and (according to the actor) "always says the wrong thing." Alia's character is obsessed with Kareena Kapoor. Varun's a heckuva dancer, so maybe the picturizations will be good. Poster is out:

trailer's out: looks like a pretty banal story of a guy who falls for a girl who's engaged to a guy who turns out to be too good to be true.

First song video (Saturday, Saturday) is out. The song is a remake of a recent Punjabi hit of the same name, and the picturization is basically a glossier update of those 90s/early 00s Bollywood videos where the hero horses around showing off his biceps. Varun's dancing is pretty good, but the objectification of Alia (who still looks ludicrously young) didn't sit well with me, so no link. Searching by song+film title on youtube will bring it up.

I saw this a few days ago because koimoi.com tweeted the link, and I totally agree with you, Odadune. There are some picturizations I see where, although I might not be pleased with the objectification of women, it doesn't make a big emotional impression with me. Just detached, philosophical disapproval. This one gave me an icky feeling, and it may indeed have something to do with how young Alia looks. She looks like a 13-year-old dressed up in her older sister's club clothes and out for a party night, trying not to let on that she's out of her depth.

Samjhawan. Honestly I can't hardly tell the difference between this, the trendy youthful love songs in Aashiqui 2 and the trendy youthful love songs in Ek Villain. But it's a cute picturization, with Alia wearing the Prettiest Dupatta Ever and Varun doing a pretty good impression of Rajshri-era Salman.

Lucky Tu Lucky Me:
warning: suggestive lyrics and dance, not entirely happy with the handling of Alia's character, but this time she comes off as more "modern teenager" and less "Lolita Bhatt auditions for Priyanka's role in Aitraaz". Varun...man, he is so danged short-even Alia is taller than him in heels, and if he ever works with Katrina, Deepika, or Sonakshi, they're going to be the ones lifting and twirling *him*. But he's an awesome dancer, and he really gets to show it here.

I cannot go that far. Nabokov's "Lolita" was a pre-adolescent, no more than 13 years old, probably less. Alia Bhatt is now 21, a full-grown woman by any culture's standards. She is now doing the work that Sridevi was doing at 16! Note that Sridevi had two years film experience by then, as Alia has now. Dancelover Lucky Tu Lucky Me: warning: [snip - d], not entirely happy with the handling of Alia's character, but this time she comes off as more "modern teenager" and less "Lolita Bhatt auditions for Priyanka's role in Aitraaz".

I'm not too worried about Alia's character. In the trailer she comes as a bit of a dip, but sweet. She does seem kind of awkward with the sexy dancing, though, and that does come across as childish.
I think I'm looking forward to this movie whether I want to or not. Alia and Varun are just so cute!

We saw it today. The chemistry was good, Alia came off very well. Yea, she looks younger than she is but she pulled it off. Varun stole the show.

This was an enjoyable piece of fluff. The keys to this sort of film are the leads' chemistry and a sharp script, and it delivers on both fronts. Varun does charming as well as Alia does feisty, and they worked well together. The script had a lot of laughs, most especially in the section where Alia's mother and grandmother tell her that foreign men are best because Indian ones just sit around with their feet up demanding to be brought the newspaper and food - that struck a chord judging from the loud female hilarity in the audience. The supporting cast are all good as well, particularly Virun's friends, who deserve huge payback for the number of beatings they take for him.
There are a few negatives, which didn't really spoil my enjoyment. The film fizzles out at the end, and is not well resolved. The music made no impression at all: I just have a vague memory of several identikit nightclub tracks. Most films made under the Karan Johar banner lazily plunder his old films for emotion rather than attempting originality; in this case they restricted themselves to a couple of occasions, and one of those was forgiveable in a film that so deliberately rehashes DDLJ. And, finally, Alia Bhatt does look disconcertingly young, and a lot less mature than the actions of her character, which raises occasional dissonances.
