(also starring Raveena Tandon and Karan Johar). Neo-noir type movie with a jazz angle, directed by Anurag Kashyap.

First look featuring Anushka Sharma:

That is quite a dress! And Anushka's back is looking very... bony.
I read somewhere that this is a take-off of Hollywood's Chicago? (Which is itself, of course, a remake of the stage musical.) I wonder if that's true and if so, how recognizable it will be.

It sounds far too male-centric to be all that close to Chicago, I think, but they're definitely going for a desi version of that visual style. It is a lovely dress. Raveena and Anushka are the only two I'm really rooting for here.

Scorsese’s editor to cut Kashyap’s RK starrerBy Ankur Pathak, Mumbai Mirror | Nov 25, 2014, 02.40 AM IST Oscar-winner Thelma Colbert Schoonmaker, who has edited films like Goodfellas, Raging Bull and The Departed, is working on Bombay Velvet's international cut. Finally, the mystery behind Anurag Kashyap's frequent trips to Los Angeles in the past few months has been solved. Mirror has learnt that the Ranbir Kapoor - starrer Bombay Velvet -like the recent Finding Fanny - will have two versions, one for the Indian audience and the other for a global release. The international cut is being edited in LA by Oscar winning film editor, Thelma Colbert Schoonmaker. Schoonmaker has been a longtime collaborator of Oscar winning director Martin Scorsese, a filmmaker Kashyap ardently admires. Right from Raging Bull, which won her an Oscar for Best Editing, and Goodfellas to The Aviator and the more recent, The Wolf of Wall Street, she has edited nearly all of Scorsese's films. She won the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's Venice International Film Festival. Kashyap's proximity to Scorsese was instrumental in him getting Schoonmaker on board. A source close to the development told Mirror, "It was crucial for Bombay Velvet to have two versions as it is going to have the widest worldwide release for a Hindi film ever with systematic releases being planned in Europe over the summer. The international version is being edited by Schoonmaker. The decision was taken as the team felt that someone of her stature could bring in a truly refreshing and global perspective to Anurag's period love story. Both LA and Mumbai are in constant touch." The Indian version is being simultaneously edited in Mumbai by Prerna Saigal, who has been an associate director on The Lunchbox and Peddlers, which she also edited.

Trailer is out. No sign of Raveena, unfortunately.

I don't really get either the swooning praise I've seen elsewhere on the web from the Ranbir fandom, or the vitriol poured out on the trailer by some of Kashyap's non-admirers. The trailer has a very weak sense of setting (it's clearly not the present-day, but if I hadn't been told this was set in the 60s, I don't think I would have guessed that on my own, and I've seen a decent number of mid-late 60s Bollywoods), especially when you compare it to Byomkesh Bakshi, whose trailer does a really good job of conveying "WWII-era Kolkatta" to the audience. Karan looks like he's about to start the rapid-fire round on his tv show. Ranbir starts out channeling his (super-annoying) smarmy-cute persona from Saawariya but I guess goes off the deep end over the girl and gets all vengeful? Anushka seems disinterested.
On the other hand, the clothes are awesome, the background music is catchy, the cinematography is nice and the basic plot although not very unique seems pretty workable.

Ranbir channeling his inner Scarface near the end of that trailer.
Looks okay. I'll probably see it if it comes to my city.

Mildly interesting featurette about the set design; we are supposed to be getting the second song in a day or two.
