Who else saw this? Can we discuss? Despite my Shahid fandom, I wasn't expecting much. But I loved it! It was charming and funny and goofy, and not at all mean-spirited in its humor. Shahid was pitch-perfectly hilarious. I'm sorry it flopped, because he really should get more humorous roles. And why did it flop?? The Indian box office sometimes seems so random to me. I read one complaint that Ileana didn't have much to do, but I really wasn't bothered by that, because the central relationship in this movie wasn't actually the romantic one, it was Shahid's character's relationship with his mother. Since I'm a mother of sons myself, that was fine for me. I hope other people will check it out. I don't always find Bollywood comedy funny, but I laughed my way though this one. It's a charmer!

I loved every minute of this movie!* I don't know why it flopped either, I thought it was hilarious and Shahid was wonderful. I liked the mother-son dynamic too, especially because Padmini Kolhapure was a great filmi maa. And the Salman Khan cameo! I'm smiling just thinking about it.
*Except Nargis Fakhri's "item song"
It's like Rajkumar Santoshi got a list of all the things I love best about Bollywood and wrapped them up in a package and put my name on it. I haven't seen Andaz Apna Apna or Ajab Prem ki Gazab Kahaani but I think I should.

Yes, "Maa" was wonderful! I liked how, even though it was a comedy, Maa was sympathetic rather than screechy or overly ridiculous. I almost forgot Salman's cameo! How could I?? The look on his face when he asks Shahid what the girl's name is, and Shahid just says he doesn't know... I hadn't even thought of checking our the director's other movies. Duh! I will go search for them post-haste. ETA: OK, turns out both of those movies are already in my Netflix queue. This is what happens when you have over 300 movies in your queue, children... Well, I guess I'll bump them up a bit!
