Kangana's fiance has deserted her, so she goes on the prepaid Honeymoon Trip by herself. Why must this release opposite Gulabi Gang?

This is getting really good reviews.
Ratings:4/5 Review By: Meena Iyer Site:Times of India (TOI) Kangana Ranaut's performance is outstanding. Whether she's crestfallen or ecstatic, selling golgappas or naively buying sex-toys, hiding her infatuation for an Italian restaurateur or showing deep dejection about her wimpy beau Vijya (Rajkummar Rao), she's a class act. Lisa Haydon and Rajkummar Rao lend good support. But this film belongs to its director Vikas Bahl.
Ratings:4/5 Review By:Mohar Basu Site:Koimoi ‘Queen‘ is easily one of the most accomplished films made in a long time. The skillful direction of Vikas and Kangana’s easy virtuoso makes this one an indulgent affair. Vikas Bahl eloquently traps the gradual transformation of Rani’s middle class terminology into a self assured laconic ‘thank you’. It could have been very forgettable and limp but Kangana’s poise pulls through the film marvellously. Queen is a winner and does it all in a regal style almost to give most film lovers a cinematic orgasm of sorts. Savor this one!
Rating:3.5/5 Review By:Rahul Desai Site:Mumbai Mirror Queen almost defies its bloated running time. I say 'almost' because one too many moments of enlightenment are piled on towards the end, none of which are surprising. This is instantly forgiven though, as soon as some very innovative end credits begin to roll.

I honestly loved QUEEN for various reasons (the main ones being Kangna's acting and how she was directed), which I believe would echo the Koimoi review. Though it might be a predictable chick flick in some places, I just found it quite enchanting entertainment and reviewed it at bit.ly/1qf929B as I find it is a suitable feel-good film to watch for International Women's Day

Lovely review hcb, I completely agree with it. While it is reminiscent of English Vinglish, this is very much its own film, and has an outstanding performance from Kangana Ranaut. I strongly recommend everyone to get out and see Queen: you'll leave the cinema a happier person than when you went in.
ETA. After seeing Queen yesterday and as much as I could take of Total Siyapaa today, my view on Queen has become still more positive. Queen is an object lesson in creating a fully-rounded central character, whose background and motivations the audience really understands and sympathises with. As a result, when the comedy comes, it's hilarious; when the emotional revelations come, they really move you; and when the film resolves itself, you're cheering in your seat for Kangna and the transformation she's gone through. There's just one moment when she's dancing on a bar in Paris that's funnier than the whole first half of Total Siyapaa put together, and it works because you feel you know exactly what sort of person Rani is and what's going through her mind. Love it.

So glad I read the positive recommendations and saw the film! Rani was a refreshing heroine and I hope to continue to see similar characters in Bollywood films.

What an utterly lovely movie. I saw it yesterday, meaning to stay at the theater to catch Total Siyapaa and top it off with Gulaab Gang today - I ended up skipping both the other flicks because I just wanted to sit with Queen for a while. I am not ready yet to have it displaced by another movie. I've written up a gushing review at Filmi Geek. Here are a few excerpts. I also noted the comparison to English Vinglish: Some things I liked about the way Rani is characterized: The rest is here. I hope this lovely movie becomes a hit. It deserves to be. If it's playing near you, do go see it.

I really loved this and did not regret taking a bus to North Bergen NJ to see it as it very annoyingly is not playing anywhere at all in NYC. Maybe I'll write more tomorrow, I can't write on an iPad really. It's the best Hindi movie I've seen in a long time, good enough to invite anybody to, especially women. Full of lovely moments and nuances, great acting, lots that is fresh.
If you run into box office info I'm very interested.

Final weekend info is not out yet, but Taran Adarsh had Gulaab Gang and Queen doing about 5.25/5.30 crores in India each over the course of Friday/Saturday. GG did better on Friday, but saw only modest growth on Saturday, while Queen's Saturday gross was about double its Friday grss, which gives you some idea of the strength of the word of mouth on Queen. Total Siyapaa did much worse in India, maybe half what either of the female-centric films did, but rather better overseas, particularly in areas with a strong Punjabi presence.
I don't think either of the two female centric films were all that cheap to make-neither cost what a Dhoom 3 would, but Gulaab Gang had relatively strong production values and two stars, while Queen seems to have shot in Europe quite a bit, and the rupee-to-euro ratio's not been all that favorable in the past few years, though it got worse about the middle of last year.

I am not particularly talented at putting reviews into well thought out words, and so I will just backup what the other posts say (and I want to increase the number of posts on this thread in support of its success.) I loved it. I will go see it again. Like Carla, I too hope that it does well and encourages Indian filmmakers and producers to continue investing in not only female led movies, but also well-crafted female led movies! I went opening night and I guess I could say the turnout was pretty good (20-25) considering it wasn't a male/Khan led flick. Not that there is anything wrong with male/Khan led movies!! And Carla, I was glad to read in your blog that someone else besides me sees the Juhi Chawla resemblance! I also noticed it in Tanu Weds Manu.

I sauntered off to the theatre a half-hour before the film, confident I'd get my favourite back row seats for the asking since I'd picked a weekday, afternoon show that usually plays to near empty halls and what do you know? We got tickets in the third row from the screen - damn! - and before the trailors were done, the hall was packed, noticeably with Punjabi auntie-ji's of all ages and sizes, ha, ha ! 'Queen' was truly worth the price of the ticket and more, a very honestly made film with a lot going for it. Living in Delhi, I could completely appreciate how well the director captures the ethos of middle class Punjabi culture, without going overboard and making the families into caricatures (including Rani's oversized kid bro who believe it or not, is what is considered a 'healthy' child in this part of the world - I am now inured to salesgirls describing my own two slender teens as 'kamzor' or 'weak' !)
Rani's metamorphosis is very carefully and subtly calibrated to feel entirely believable - no words to describe Kangana's pitch perfect performance. I was especially happy with her three 'firangi' friends - their behaviour and attitude a big eye-opener, I hope, to many of our stalker-type, immature desi boys who consider every female fair game for their inflated egos. Go watch!

I hadn't been impressed with what I saw of the promos, but you guys all make this sound like a great viewing experience. Look forward to catching it down the road. Taran Adarsh reports that it did a shade under 19 crore over the course of it's opening week, and the second Friday seems to have gone well.

BoxOfficeIndia says that it earned another 9.5 crore during its Second weekend. Last movie to do as well Second as First was Vivah, 2006, Shahid Kapoor & Amrita Rao, which became a Blockbuster. BOI listed Queen as "Average" during the first week, and has not yet changed it. In other news, Times of India quotes Dehpika Padukone as being "jealous" of Kagana's excellent acting. In a good way, of course. D I hadn't been impressed with what I saw of the promos, but you guys all make this sound like a great viewing experience. Look forward to catching it down the road.
